...are without doubt McDonald's French Fries boxes.
They're just the right size, so that you don't pack them too heavy. Strong and able to handle apparently limitless stacking. And finally, they're free, from those helpful folks at your local McDonald's.
They don't have handles, but nobody's perfect.

Ha! Plastic milk crates from our local dairies. 18x18x22", stackable, with handles and made in such a way you can see the contents,
My shed is FULL of them.
And also free, from round the back of the supermarket at midnite.

And plastic bread trays, I believe they make good drawers under work benches. :-)

SS,
Those boxes are good as screw holders but a trifle small for anything else :-0

Old army ammo boxes are very good. Stackable, cheap (well they used to be) and almost indestructible..
Stella case (24 x330cl bottles) are very good once you tape them up...

Good when you take lids off, rubbish otherwise.

Every house move i've done, has had at least a few McDonalds Fries boxes, i agree with SS (should I call the press?! ;-) they're pretty nifty.

At one time my mother still had some genuine tea chests.
From memory, about 3ft high by 2ft 6" square, made of ply or similar, reinforcing battens around the top, and still with bits of tea in the bottom.
