I wonder how a court over here would deal with this? Moving the golf ball is irritating, silly, etc, but I can't think of an offence to cover it. Smashing the car is easy - criminal damage. The next offence might be the lad who swore at one of the golfers, verbal insults can amount to common assault. The second golfer was foolish to run at the two younger men swinging his club when they were in retreat and therefore presenting no threat. He is in line for affray - causing a person of reasonable firmness present at the scene to fear for their safety. In summary, it's quite possible the 'victims' - the two golfers - could be the only people to face criminal charges following this incident. Can you imagine what the golfing classes would make of that? Reply to this message | Report message

The kids were messing about and could possibly get done for tresspass. The old men could get done for ABH and crinimal damage. I actually thought it was quite funny because the kids have gone into quite some length to pull the stunt off. I suspect it was meant to be a joke and not a serious attack on the golf players. It's possible the owner of the golf course - unlikely to be the golfers - could sue the lads for damages. But I can't immediately see what damage the landowner has sustained, so trespass is a non-starter. Why did the kids decide to interfere with 2 old guys they didn't know who were having a perfectly pleasant day. Sure the old guys were a bit grumpy and went a bit over the top but it's always struck me that if you want to play a joke do it on someone you know and who ou know will see the funny side. Basically my kids play a joke on me it's funny, some stranger plays a joke on me maybe it's not so funny. I reckon honours were just about even. Reply to this message | Report message

If that was my kids doing that and they came running home and gave an honest account of what happened, id have no hesitation in telling them they got what they deserved. Its pretty simple in my book. I am out having a friendly game of golf, in a place where only golf is played, Some lad - as a joke - decides he will ruin and mess with my day for his own amusement. There superior attitude does them little credit and certainly does nothing to engender sympathy. It's been my misfortune to spend time in a couple of golf club clubhouses. Lets look at those kids, they obviously knew their stuff with regard to RC models and I suspect that they may also race them... now how may they have reacted if two "grumpy" old men had walked onto their race circuit and deliberately removed/turned over one of their cars during a race? Similar reaction I tend to think... Ok, they did it for a laugh, that was obvious from the fact that it was getting video'd and thus hoped they'd get some sort of reaction... but the golfers' reaction would have been the same as any other person involved in a competitive game/race... they surely didn't expect any other reaction... As Martin said, it was "natural justice"... they have no reason to complain at the outcome, and the golfers got some satisfaction for their spoilt hole... Reply to this message | Report message
