I live in a block of flats with a flat roof which leaks.

The management company have told me that "the tray around the parapet is not continuous and needs replacing."

Does anybody know exactly what 'the tray' is?

I would guess from your minmalist description that it is an 'internal gutter' behind a small parapet wall - probably was made out of lead until somebody nicked it!
