These have now reached the point where they can be bought for less than the price of a 2nd hand car, at last! I have heard that, being body temperature sensitive they cannot be used in conjunction with an electric blanket. The thought being that the blanket heating affects the performance of the memory foam. My partner cannot sleep in the winter without an electric pre-heat at least. Please can any member comment on this matter? Thank you. Reply to this message | Report message

Sorry to avoid your question PP but have you tried one? Me and Mrs Focus were keen to buy one, but before we did we happened to spend a night at a hotel which had them on their beds. We were underwhelmed - IIRC we kept rolling into each other. For goodness sake... However if you have tried one and they work for you, then apologies for the digression. After many years of bad backs, we bought a memory foam matress last year. It is without doubt the finest invention ever, I doubt you slept in a hotel with a good memory foam matress Mr F, for it is impossible to roll into each other, as the matress creates individual impressions. Mattresses are a personal thing, but I've been impressed with memory foam. I put a memory 'topper' on the mattress at Ifithelps Towers and am pleased with the result. My bed at the caravan in leafy North Yorkshire has a Myers hybrid sprung/memory foam mattress which I reckon beats just springs for comfort. Reading up about them, it was often stated it is better to get one delivered that is not rolled up but flat. We bought ours from a company that not only delivered it flat but also on a trial basis. "Try it out and after x weeks you do not like it them we will collect it." Most MF matresses appear to have two or three inches of MF on top of normal foam ( hence the can be rolled up for transportion). Reply to this message | Report message

I mention this only in case anyone is interested. My parents bought an extremely expensive latex/memory foam mattress from 'The Heathy House' as my father suffers from allergies and they are supposed to be as good as it gets if you have problems with dust mites etc. Sadly, after less than a week, it became apparent that he is allergic to the latex in the mattress, and so they are unable to use it and need to get rid of it. I been away for a few days but my thanks for the comments to date. I agree that the matresses need trying out but the faffing about getting it collected at the end of a 30 day free trial is a bit off putting. I have to say, without getting too personal that Mrs PP and I have very different body thermostats! She sleeps almost fully dressed plus cashmere bedsocks and all all-night electric blanket while I sleep in a pair of boxer shorts type jimjams and lie on top of the duvet to get away from all the heat! I think perhaps a new decent pocket spring mattress is the way to go. I like my comforts - I take my goosedown pillow with me on holiday as nothing else will do! It would appear that most if not all the matresses have just either 2" or 3" of memory foam as the top layer. We had a 2" topper prior to replacing out old matress with a memory foam topped latex matress. Maybe try a half width topper thus saving some ££s Reply to this message | Report message

My fairly cheap memory mattress topper at Iffy Towers is just, well, topper. The bed at the caravan is a spring mattress with memory foam incorporated and is also very comfy. Mattresses are very much a matter of personal preference, but I would recommend anyone give a topper a try. An inch thick is all you need and there are plenty about for around £50. Oh the joys of a B&B where I have to try and get some cushions onto the floor under my hip and grab the usual two and half hours at best. Sigh. I can now sleep in on a Sunday morning which is something I could never do before due to backache. The only issue I have is the heat but I throw back the covers if I get too hot.
