I am waiting for my oscilloscope to arrive in the post so I can start diagnosing the problem with my amp. I will need something to adjust the bias pots. Now I know I can use a pecision screwdriver but if I slip I could get a bit of a shock.
Does anybody know where I can get something from? I have searched Maplin and found nothing.
I have tried google, seen some American suppliers but the links are about drugs.
I am also getting back into electronics as a hobby, it has been too long.

I have used plastic knitting needle suitably shaped in the past.

Oh and chop of the end for tweaking pots.
I have the proper tools but have been in my box for decades.
Radio Spares have Trimmer Tools if you want the Pukka item.

I think you have not been searching with the proper words :-)

Thanks even better :).
i think I may have cost lost in a load of bush some where.
|
I forgot about RS, there is one 6-7 miles away from me in Stockport so I may pop down when the snow clears. I will check they are in stock first. It would be better than a home made tool given that I am working live.

YOu wont get a shock, you are poking about in the low voltage section.
Have to say, this has disaster written all over it.

Haven't you got a small plastic handled screwdriver ?

I have lots of metal ones small enough to drive pot screw but I don't think I have any plastic ones small enough. I loose a lot of screw drivers doing my job! I am always leaving cheap tools behind at jobs.
I used to always use small screw drivers but but they were little 9v circuits with no real ampage inside them.
|
I would've thought you just need a multimeter to set the bias not a 'scope.
|
Indeed I do :). The one I use for PC power supplies is too cheap and I don't want to rely on it for setting the bias. I was offered this used one at a very cheap price so I decided to buy that. It has a multimeter function on it too.
It will be handy for other things. It is something I have always wanted but never wanted to pay £100+ for. It comes with all the crocidile clips too so hopefully I can clip the probes onto the resistors so I can keep my hands away from the insides while I take the measurements.

Never have I got such a wrong idea about the thread subject from the title before. A prize ought to be given to Rattle.
|
What about a small mains test screwdriver....too big ?
Insulated down to the tip and a quid at the hardware shop on Upper Chorlton Road....or borrow one of mine.
I've got a Draper set as well....a bit of heat shrink down the shaft might do.
Very small, will do spectacle screws

Likely to be way to large for the screw Rattle is hoping to adjust. Jeweller's screw driver nearer the size but all metal. Tape it up?
|
My gut feeling about this echoes Zero's: this isn't going to end well.
However:

one end of that should do.
They used to make nicer ones with a spring clip to go inside a jacket breast pocket, when engineers wore tweed.... I've still got the jacket, and even the trimmer somewhere.... :-)
Non ferrous blade on the trimmer, for I.F. can adjustment.. happy days.

Me too Crankcase:)
I've had a busy week this week and trying to catch up a bit this morning.
I looked at the thread title and just had to read it!

It sounds like one of those funny stories by Frank Snore and Dennis Boredom.
Something to do with a lorry driver smuggling dope across Alaska, perhaps?

in the cold light of day, the item above isn't quite what I was thinking about - but this is:
RS Stock No. 543-434
unfortunately they only seem to sell them in a pack of 5.
The knitting needle suggestion way up at the top of the thread is plan A.
Plan B involves the mods, or you, contacting me with a postal address, as I've come across 2 of them at home in the mug full of pens, small screwdrivers, etc.
I'll post one gratis - provided you keep us all updated regarding the insurance claim, and don't blame me :-)
|
I really can't help any further....I've never driven an insulated pot.
Sat on a few uninsulated ones, though.

If he shorts the electrics and burns the house down there's a forum member who is well-placed to advise on the rebuild.

At the end of the day all I am doing is making a small adjustment. I am not exactly doing any modifications like replacing the transformer or recapping it :). Ted it is a very tiny screw just like the ones you used to get on the capacitors on the old transistor radios.
My scope still hasn't arrived so there is no rush anyway :). The old Marantz isn't doing too badly now its warmed in.
