Am I the only one who is getting a bit sick of pedants?
I would tell you why but I'm sure I would just give you all a chance to pick fault with it, or I would use a phrase that annoys someone.
There are a lot of people like me out there and at the moment, they certainly won't feel very welcome here if they are reading the forum prior to posting.
I see the BR made a request to pedants and bullies to tone it down a bit yesterday, maybe things have gone full circle in the past 9 months or so, they usually do.
Pat
PS. Spell checked but not grammar checked:(

I think I am all pedanted out now. :-)
|
Ere!!! I don't actually know what the word pedant means!
And, I've managed to get through 58 years of this life without knowing.
Sure - I could check it out on Dict.com, if I felt the need to know but ... WTF!

Can you tell/show me where Pat? I missed it.
|
I wouldn't dream of linking to it on here F but it was in a sticky post at the top of the Motoring forum and made by Avant. I replied to it:)

At the moment I'm having to spend a lot of time working at the PC where I have to be spot on with spelling, grammar and the facts I'm dealing with.
When I take 5 minutes off to come on here I want to be able to relax and enjoy that break.
If I wanted to take part in a willy waving competition...well, I wouldn't, would I?
I'm sadly lacking in that department!

By "BR" she means the dark side. Have you looked over there, or did your old eyes miss it? Mind how you go, don't trip in the dark, your night vision is not as good as that of the teenagers who post there.
www.agingeye.net/visionbasics/theagingeye.php
The light adapted eye of a 20 year old receives six times more light than that of an 80 year old. In dark adapted conditions, the 20 year old eye receives about 16 times more light. In comparison to younger people, it is as though older persons were wearing medium-density sunglasses in bright light and extremely dark glasses in dim light.

Ah - now it makes sense. Thanks.

Haven't been over there for ages actually. Might have a look though to see what I'm missing.

Pop ups - or as HJ used to refer to them "pop unders" ;o)
|
It's generally meant in good fun. If I'm attacked I often reply thus .......... :-D
Nothing else, just :-D

im with dog
i thought a pedant was a light fitting with bling so just kept away
|
I'm with L'escargot on this one. It really shouldn't be taken seriously.
|
Hello, I am new here, I have just been demoted from the Pedant thread for incorrect pedantry.
Anything goes for I from here on in, more or less, like.
|
I agree L'es and in the most part I can take it as fun, but it can become tiresome when you see a thread you really want to contribute to, but have to hesitate and make sure it's just right before posting.
If it's making me think twice when I know you all now, how does it appear to someone wanting to post for the first time?
Welcome back from the mad house, Cliff:)

Can we invite Sarah Palin to join us
She told ABC she was "looking at the lay of the land". :-)
She has a weigh with words
"I'm engaged in the internal deliberations candidly, and having that discussion with my family," she said.
|
There is an allegation that Sarah Palin is "The Lay of the Land" - well Alaska at least
|

Two thoughts -
I presume that implies being the equivalent "the village bike", in our part of the World :)
But, don't the natives from that far north traditionally have conjugal rights to the woman of the house when visiting?
Or have I made that one up??

She was referring to her daughter.

Whatever!

I must just be unlucky as I've never had an Auntie Pendant...:-(
|
Should that be an Aunty Pendant? Or is saying that a hanging offence?
|
>> Should that be an Aunty Pendant? Or is saying that a hanging offence?
Depends where you're from I suppose. I've seen it spelt both ways, so I'd imagine that both spellings are acceptable.
|
I've decided I'm going to be an "inde-pedant".... ;-)
|
I actually typed that in a post earlier - but thought nooooo noooo no..

That's because you knew that independent does not have an "a" in the spelling. ;-)
|
Isn't an anitpedant from Australia or New Zealand?
|
I used to sit on a club committee which had one member who started every conversation with the expression: "I, myself, me, personally think that..."
It became intensely irritating.

That is not anti pedant. Should it not be in the "Most useless phrases" thread?
|

Typical pedantic reaction...
:-)
>>Should it not be in the..>>
But if it already was, are you suggesting it shouldn't?
:-))

He's one of the few on here who do know that.
Oops, sorry, wrong thread.
|
Oh Lord.
Pendant. Hanging.
I did try.
|
I get so confuddled.. Is this a thread for pedants or not?
It seems there are an awful lot of them in full flow here..
(I would have thought pedants were "pedes" and thus walking rather than flowing but that is the benefit of a classical edukashun)
|
They're just trying to annoy me madf, but I'm rising above it.
Pat

Don't worry Pat. Take a deep breath and count to 5 million. :-)
|
I'm already past that, I must be mellowing with age!

Is this something that has been discovered in Cern?

At least they have a couple of playgrounds now, Pat. So we know where they are, and can send them back if they don't behave. :-)

I'm sure you are not...
old that is :-)

Pat, I've a pedantic nature - that's the way I'm made and I don't regard it as a bad thing, it just is. It doesn't mean that I think I am always right. I dislike the word pedant being used pejoratively or attached to the word bully - I don't think they are the same thing.
I don't gratuitously correct people as a rule, and I hope I've never bullied you Pat. If I have, I thoroughly deserve your disapprobation and I apologise without reservation.
In fact, as somebody who calls himself pedantic, I'm feeling a bit picked on ;-)
|
Please don't feel picked on Manatee:)
You've never bullied me and you would certainly know if you had done!
Not all pendants are bad and I learn a lot from reading some of it.
It's when it becomes the major topic running through all the threads.
I wonder when the forum will be renamed Car4pedantry?
Certainly this week I've felt more at home listening to my lorry driving mates moaning about BMW drivers, spelling mistakes and all:)
