...Another waste of money...

Good luck to them if they can raise it by public subscription.

Our built environment has been much-enhanced over many years by structures paid for in a similar way.

well i like it and see it as an assett for tourists just like the angel of the north and blackpool tower

I am not sure in what way the Angel of the North is an asset to tourism. Most people see it as they pass by on the train or the A1; I don't think they stop to park and look at it and I don't think that it gives them the idea to stop in Gateshead or wherever to spend some money. One sees it and moves on.

I've driven past the "Angel of the North" many times. Have to say I have no personal opinion of it at all. It's just sort of there. Can't say it would break my heart if it wasn't.

Oddly enough, there's a meerkat made of straw near here which draws a crowd. Not a lot going on round here though, to be fair.

A few people do, but I take your general point.

The benefits of the Angel are intangible, putting Gateshead 'on the map', fostering local pride.

Hard to put a financial value on that sort of thing.

But the amount of publicity the Angel receives would cost millions if you had to buy it as advertising.

I have, once. Didn't spend any money there though.

Despite ANY cutbacks we must NEVER forget. Go for it.

As a piece of art, it looks good. There is always a place for culture.

As long as they do not use public funds then it sounds like a good idea i.e. if people want it, they'll get it. Mind you, the irony is that the Hurricane was much cheaper to make, and easier to fly, but the Spitfire has seized the imagination.

Odd. The Spitfire was about 9 1/2 metres long; the article says "The 131ft (40m) replica - one-and-a-half times the size of the actual plane"

One possible reading of the report is that the replica aircraft is 150% of the size of a real one and will be mounted on a plinth to make the whole construction 131ft high. Another possible reading is that reporters can't do maths and don't get out much much!
