 NPower refunds - BobbyG
Got a nice letter through the door from NPower with a refund in respect of overcharges from 2 or 3 years ago. I had seen mention of this on Watchdog.

However instead of applying a credit to my account, or issuing a cheque in my name, they have issued a letter which I need to take to the Post Office with 2 forms of id and they will refund me the money.

Whats that all about??

A lot of people won't be bothered/will forget/lose letter/won't understand etc.

I've just had to 'jump through hoops' to claim a 'cash-back'. Many would've given up.

£34.73 in my case. I am equally mystified. They have my bank details, they could easily just send me the money if they want to keep it separate from the billing as they say.

I received on of these letters in the week. The letter was quite vague as to exactly why a refund was being issued, and i too thought it strange that the money wasnt transferred into my bank.
However, i took the letter to the local Post office yesterday and received my £36.28. so am not complaining.

When we owe them money, we are urged to use modern methods such as Direct Debit and the internet, because it's cheap and convenient for them.

When they owe us money, they retreat to the stone age.

Why?

I reckon they hope many of us will not bother to go through the 'double ID Post Office visit' rigmarole.

My payment is only £12.99, and collecting it is not top of my 'to do' list.

It might be because they have had to put the money in "escrow" ie lodge it with a third party.

I'm amazed. I switched last year from Scottish Power. My direct debit had left me in credit and while the "bye bye, you've switched" letter gave several ways in which I could pay them, there was no mention of them refunding me. I had to chase them.
