A Bronkhorstspruit traffic officer was sentenced to an effective six years in prison for trying to bribe a judge, the Saturday Star reported.

Pretoria Regional Court magistrate Peet Johnson convicted Unity Lovely Mahlangu, 46, of trying to solicit a bribe from Johannesburg High Court judge Geraldine Borchers.

On Friday, the court heard that Borchers was travelling on the N4 highway on June 26, 2008 when a traffic office pulled her over for going over the speed limit.

Mahlangu attempted to solicit a bribe of R200.

The court refused Mahlangu leave to appeal.

*hahahaha! people NOT to solicit bribes from... High court judges!*

Could be, but I did do some research first, and this article seems to suggest she is a he.

As for the OP, there are places where the judge would have retaliated with an even bigger bribe demand.

Surely they only have magistrates in Peckham?

Judges are paid well in this country to make 'that sort of thing' less likely. I was thinking about places a bit further afield than that.

I was intrigued by the absence from iffy's link on Unity Mitford of the fourth sister, now the Duchess of Devonshire.

Shome mishtake shurely? Or can writers and communists be associated with nazi-lovers in a way that duchesses can't?
