I have a Santander Everyday Credit Card. It's set up so the full balance is paid by Direct Debit on the due date, usually around 27th or 28th. In practice it's taken around the 25th.

There was about £300 due this month and noticed today it hadn't been taken so I called them today and asked why not.

Following on from the trip to La Palma with Jet 2 I'd booked and they then cancelled I'd had a large refund.

Apparently any refund to a card before the payment date is treated as a payment and reduces or eliminates the payment due for that month.

I didn't know that.

You mean there was still a balance so you got (or would have been) charged interest?

The refund was (considerably) more than the £300 due on the 2 October statement and payable on 28 October so that's regarded as settled in full.

No interest due. Next statement will be on 02 November. I think I've had a second interest free period on the £300.

In that case it makes sense! I have DD's for the balance on the cards we use but I haven't had a problem with refunds - whether it adjusts the DD I don't know, probably depends when it happens.

I protested loudly when my CC acount was in credit, but I was still charged interest. In the terms and conditions: first they take your CC payments and charge interest on the outstanding balance, then they look at your positve credit and deduct that from the bill. I'll never make an early payment again, to ensure my credit limit isn't exceeded.

I've two Santander cards with full balance DD payments taken close to the end of the month.

Just occasionally, with balances significantly more than here, the combined DDs could tip me into authorised overdraft so I watch them carefully and spotted the £300 was not taken.

The payment of quite a chunk to Jet 2 and them refunding it was balance neutral. I suspected the refund had been treated as a payment but that was confirmed by Santander this morning.

If there's interest charged on the November payment I'll be on the blower again!
