I know that like cars that beds are very subjective comfort wise, so after looking in some well known bed shops locally and being horrified at the mattress prices ... Took a look online.
Ordered what I thought was a decent quality mattress suitable for us.
Surprised to find delivered a mattress in a box, compressed and rolled up, thought nothing of it.
Unpacked and let it sort itself out for the day but emailed to say surprised it came in a box.
Got an email from the company the next day saying that they had delivered the wrong mattress by mistake but as it was their mistake and I had used it I could keep it, On checking the box it came in with the name and specification I noticed at the "discounted prices" I had a mattress costing three times more than i paid.
This years first bit of luck..
After 2 nights it does feel nice.. just have to get used to it.

That's a result!!
I thought I'd seen some mattresses advertised with 1 year period during which you can return it if you just don't like it. Wonder what happens to them (and how many people do it)!
In fact I wonder what happens to all the returns to shops, especially online shopping - we buy a lot online but of that a fair bit goes back (clothes especially - get two or three sizes and only keep the ones you want - I know that happens a lot!)

It does happen a lot, and with clothing the retailers have only themselves to blame. I had a fair collection of cycling trade team jerseys that I eventually sold on ebay. On every one I listed the measurements for front and back length, chest size, width across the shoulders, sleeve length inner and outer and even the depth of the rear pockets. I never had a single one returned.
If retailers insist on only providing the meaningless description of S,M,L on their sizes they can't complain about high return rates. The one place that does get it right is on this is Temu.

I found out many years ago that mattresses are very expensive from furniture shops. I presume it's because they have high overheads. I also discovered that the same mattress is sold by different shops under different names. By looking at the manufacturer's website, it's possible to correctly identify the model required and order directly from an online company for a much lower price.
|
Nice result ORB, we're thinking about a new mattress, some of the prices are eye watering, wife's not keen on the idea of a sack stuffed with straw for some reason?
My son in the North East of Scotland had a hell of a job finding a company that would deliver to him.

We've found IKEA foam mattresses very comfortable.
Beds in both main bedrooms and the caravan are thus equipped.

Paul..
The retail pricing is completely daft.
I bought a very discounted mattress with an extra 20% off a price that was already discounted.. Get it? It was from a trader I had previously used for our previous small single, normal single and King sixe pocket sprung orthopaedic mattresses as we both have back problems. Price was reasonable but a bit of a glitch on the website (via ebay ) showed various options and prices for the same 4000 pocket sprung sixes. One day the prices had dropped from about £189 to about £135 and there was a 20 % extra discout, so about £107.
What I got was a Soufflé Breeze Medium-Firm orthoposture Pocket Sprung Mattress in a box. On the various websites the RRP was £658 but with the various offers coub be had for £329. (Beds.co.uk)
So quite a nice deal for £107. and some pennies with free delivery.

For those of you who had mattresses delivered to your house, did the delivery company take away your old one?

I think when we had it delivered disposal was an option.
But I've taken more than one mattress and at least one chopped up bed base to the Council tip.
Current one was from IKEA and we disposed of the other. A struggle to get in the skip at the Civic Amenity Site.

If it's of any use, our local council operate a disposal service for £40 for 3 large items and basically take it down the tip for you (used to be £10 in 2020). Yours may offer something similar?

I slit my old mattress across the middle. (King size) and my neighbour and I folded it into the Korando. Drivers seat a bit forwards.
Why? Colchester are £73.20. for a special collection. Max 6 items.

I tried rolling a double recently but it turned out more of a fold, using ratchet straps to compress it and hold it together enough so I could get it into (and out of) the estate.

Joys of a large estate. Mattresses and double beds easy peasy.
The Berlingo swallowed most things but we were caught out with an IKEA settee. It should have fitted with a couple of cm to spare but we'd not checked the packed dimensions which made it too long. OK if we folded the front passenger seat down but then no space for Mrs B. Would have been OK if we'd not taken out all three back seats as there was space for the O/S.
Left her in the cafe while I shuttled home and returned in the Fabia.
Sofa to heavy for me to extract it on my own.

I've never had a problem getting rid of old mattresses. I put them on Freegle/Freecycle/Facebook marketplace.
Recently got rid of a pocket sprung king size, surprised to see them fold it in half and squeeze it into the back of a Qashqai. Don't know what it came out like at the other end, I understood you shouldn't fold spring mattresses.

There was a problem with some companies offering to take away the old mattress and putting it in the truck with the new ones being delivered.
Some folk with new mattresses couldn't figure out how they got bed bugs.
|
I bought my Harrison Spinks mattress from Stokers in Ormskirk. They charfed £40 to remove my old mattress that I bought from then]m ten years ago.
The new mattress is very heavy and is 36cm deep. My old mattress was 29cm deep. The delivery men were great and took care taking the mattress upstairs, unpacking, putting it on the divan base and removing all of the packing.
|
Last mattress was from an online company, good make, excellent quality, delivered sealed in a swathe of thick plastic, offered to take the old one away for £30 - declined as I feared it being dumped. Sold the old one online the same day. I found out later that British Heart Foundation collect for nothing.

Surprised anyone would want to buy a second hand mattress

Never been homeless and finally got an unfurnished place of your own you need to equip while potless then?

What do you think you sleep on when you go on holiday then?
|
|
There are second hand mattresses and there are 'second hand' mattresses which look like something from crime scenes with all manner of bodily fluids and wildlife on them, Only fit for hazmat handling and burning.

Ours was in good nick, zipped into a mattress protector from new. I found myself in a charity shop yesterday morning as it was warm and I was waiting to be collected from the doctor's place. Amazing what appears to sell. Local Foodbank takes donated items occasionally, usually new and food or pet related...people pile in for simple things especially saucepans surprisingly -I was surprised what people don't have
|
That’s a fair point Dog. Mind you since I got a rather nasty electric shock from the iron in the house I’m staying in this afternoon, the mattress might be the lesser danger to life around here.
It’s nice and sunny though:+)

Sun = clear sky
Clear sky = drop in temperature.
Heat pump COP drop = £££
I'll stick with the clouds for now thanks.

In about 1984 my Mum and I (for I was 14) were strolling through Bracknell shopping centre and passed a retailer selling Bang & Olufsen tellies. We needed a new telly, and I spotted they had an end of line model on special discount. We went in and bought it, to be delivered to our house a few days later. When the delivery didn't arrive, Mum rang up and they apologised profusely, saying they'd sold it to someone else by mistake and no longer had it at the shop. As a good will gesture they sent out a brand new telly of the latest spec - quite a big upgrade at the time - on loan until they could find an example of the model we'd paid for. The one we'd paid for was an old style fake wood cabinet style with no remote - the model they lent us was the latest metal cased one with an early flat screen, built in stereo speakers and space-age metal remote control. This thing, were it still working today, wouldn't look much out of place against the last of line CRT TVs, or even modern flat screens it was that cool.
A couple of weeks later the shop closed down and we never heard anything about it again. Kept the swanky new one. IIRC it only died about 10 years ago.

We (well my parents) had a Bang & Olufsen TV in the early '80s.
They were great TVs, and to think we had a choice of, oooh, 3, no 4 channels!
|
I had my first Bang & Olufsen stereo in 1975, bought with a tax refund in Harrods sale, ( 2nd and thirds from Rex Radio in Kilburn Lane now sadly closed ) The third one I was actually living in Switzerland by then and drove over to collect it after the very sniffy dealer in Geneva wanted me to pay upfront without giving a delivery date, and I had been stuffed buying a stereo from another dealer who didn't deliver what I'd ordered.
Currently have two B&O S3 powered bluetooth speakers with one of them on the blink.. so I think that'll be the end of my ownership.
|
|
B & O was way out of my price league.... and much over-rated IMHO. Three sets in a mere 50yrs? Jeez! In 1975 I bought an Akai AA 8030 tuner amp, a pair of Goodmans Magnum SL speakers and Pioneer SE 30a headphones. All still working fine, with minimal maintenance to contacts and headphone wiring. All still available on t' internet at prices far more than I paid. As for my cars, buy the best you can afford....make 'em last. Don't even need a sound bar for the posh TV - just use the Akai's aux input if extra sound quality needed....which isn't often.
|
Three sets in a mere 50yrs?
Sold 1st set to a mate when I moved from the UK to jersey sold 2nd set to a mate when I moved to Switzerland.. The third was a fab setup Turntable,Cd player tuner and amp 2 redline 60's 2 redline 140's and 2 beolab 6000's. Got my kids to love surroundsound classical music.. And I did NOT think it was overpriced then. The S3's are for blutooth from my desktop which also has my entire music collection on it.

Sounds great, ORB. Sadly, my kids' tastes were more Jamiroquai than Mozart. Even more sadly, my 76yr old ears would no longer appreciate such excellence!

You can get a soundbar with a separate powered subwoofer for not a lot of money, will increase the quality of your TV at least and good for bluetooth.

I second that, I've got a Sony soundbar, improves the quality no.end, in modern flat screen tvs the speakers face downwards which does nothing for the sound quality, I've disabled the speakers on ours and rely solely on the soundbar.
|
|
Will third that. I recently replaced my ancient Pioneer amplifier with a Samsung Q990f soundbar system with wireless satellites and subwoofer. 23 drivers in total. So say it is loud would be a massive understatement and yet the audio remains crystal clear even when turned up. Watching movies is an absolute pleasure. Bluetooth is built in along with Spotify connect, which can stream lossless audio directly to the bar. Purists may disagree, but soundbars are just so convienient to set up and go that they should be the default option. The lack of speaker cabling is just the icing on the cake.
|
|
I went from a Sonos soundbar at £600-odd, plus a Sonos sub at the same price, and two Play:1s, to a Denon AVR and a 5.1 set of Canton speakers. Same performance as the Sonos set-up for 30% of the price. The only downside is the Denon's lack of connectivity to the Sonos app, but it does have Bluetooth.

I was amazed they lasted as long as they did before closing! (A client of ours owns a shop and upper opposite).

Eric (in 1978) had a Rolls Royce to do deliveries in. He used to let me drive it in the evenings doing deliveries and I would wait outside the "clients" houses or flats wherever to make sure it didn;t get nicked.
