 All Season Tyres - CGNorwich
Need to replace four tyres so thinking of switching to Michelin Cross Climate 2 rather than summer tyres. Wasn’t totally impressed with the Goodyears Turanzas last winter. Probably take a slight hit on range but accept that for security.
Thoughts?

Reviews say they wear well, good winter grip, little noisy and fuel consumption takes a hit*. (*depending on size)

A lot depends on what part of the country you live in.
The further north the more likely you’ll need winter tyres.
Hope I’m not preaching the blinking obvious.

Michelin were pretty much first to the market with the original CCs and I bought a set. Over the years other options entered the market. I went from CCs to Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons which were considerably cheaper than CCs. I never tested either in really bad weather but had no issues with grip, consumption, noise or wear.

I am half looking at the moment for my wife’s car and CCs are a still a lot dearer than Goodyear. Which in turn are more expensive than summer tyres, but not a lot. I suspect Michelin are still best overall, excepting price. But that long been the case with Michelin on any tyre. I may just stick with summer tyres on her car and she can use my All season equipped car if the forecast indicates.

For the last two years the German ADAC has put the Goodyear 4Seasons Gen-3 at the top of their list.

"Goodyear 4Seasons Gen-3 "

My car is and EV (VW ID3) and unike the Michelins the Goodyears are not specifically recommended for EVs

We have them on our Zoe. What makes a tyre EV suitable? Provided it has the right load capacity and speed rating, any tyre would be suitable.

Never bothered with this summer/winter tyre thing and never will. What a faff, changing tyres/ wheels twice a year.

Down here in Hertfordshire there are seldom conditions in which winter tyres would be of any benefit anyway.

I couldn’t agree more unless it helps your job…milkman friend operating on the heights above Bradford put specific winter tyres on to get around Denholme & Thornton.

I know two friends who switch wheels & tyres every autumn & spring. Both retired, absolutely no need to go out if it snows, so what’s the bleedin point ? Roads will be jammed up anyway. And they pay a local garage to change them twice a year.

Back when I owned my 2004 BMW 330 convertible I did fit Michelin Alpins ( pre Cross Climate ?) when it needed 4 new tyres, left them on all year, and TBH on the few occasions I got caught out with snow they were amazingly good on a rear wheel drive car.

“Roads will be jammed up anyway.”

Probably with people driving in the snow on summer tyres”

Seems harsh to criticise someone who takes a cautious view of driving in the north in winter. Would you go walking in the hills in winter in trainers?

Which is why I am proposing purchasing all season tyres rather than tyres optimised for summer use.

I recently renewed all 4 tyres on my polo, I chose Khumo via Black circle an acquaintance who used to be manager at Continental Tyres said Khumo were “alright “

I use Cross Climates as a default setting once I need new tyres on almost any car.

I will put them on the company BMW when needed, they are on the Golf I have and they were on my daughter's Clio too.

Not only will they be great if I venture to the continent for business in the winter (I tend to at least twice a year) but they are - in my humble opinion - so much stickier than 'normal' tyres in the dry.

The Golf GTI would scramble for some grip when really putting the foot down whereas with the CC's there is none of that at all. A really tangible difference that surprised me to be honest.

Wear rate on the longer miles I did in a Merc E Class estate were comparable to standard tyres.
From my perspective, it's a no brainer.

It's nice to know you have the best for all weathers, even if winter conditions over here are rarely that bad that often.

That’s encouraging SFD. I elected to go forCC2s and they are in fact being fitted at the moment. I’m expecting a small reduction in range but I think that will be a fair trade off for extra grip in winter. The Bridgestones could be a little hairy in wet icy conditions.

Me too. A local Black circle agent fitted a couple of Khumos for me last week (at home)
I have used Khumo for many years but they get an easy life in Surrey.

When I first got my Jaguar X type I could not believe how noisy the original Pirellis were.
Swapped to Khumos and they were very quiet.

Collected my car after MOT this AM. Without prompting, and I’d already checked tread depth remaining, my mechanic pal advised that in 12 months, if my annual mileage remained the same, then I would probably need to consider replacing all 4 Continentals. They would still be legal but approaching legal limits…at which point I shall look at all season tyres.
All Season Tyres - martin aston
As you may know (and if they are the same as ours) Continentals have two sets of wear indicators. One, with a rain drop, about 3mm, the other at the usual 1.6mm. The 3mm is something to do with winter rules in some countries.
Useful if you like to change tyres “early”.

Have had Michelin CCs on my last few cars. Love them and were very good in any show we have had.

Two negatives
1. If your spring bursts and goes through your tyre then you obviously need to replace with the same which might not be as easily purchased as a run of the mill summer tyre.
2. The all seasons compound is a lot softer than standard tyres. Which means if you are like me and have a driveway of loose stones, they love picking up the stones in the tread and then depositing them down the gap between your brake discs and the disc shield which is a PITA.

I now have grids on my driveway placed for my 4 wheels to sit on. Helps prevent it but doesn’t stop it.

Very happy CC2 user here. Equal efficiency to the EV specific tyres they replaced but quieter.

Thats very encouraging. I thought they might be noisier. Out of interests what car do you have?
