Anyone use them for their dogs and if so what one?
I have been given a voucher for a free Tractive tracker but need to basically pay one or two years “membership” upfront as opposed to monthly.
Seem to have lots of good reviews as long as you don’t need to involve customer service!

What does a dog tracker do, or rather what purpose does it serve?
Is it like a caravan tracker in case doggo is stolen or goes off an a frolic of its own?
|
My mate has one on his unruly hound. It has "got away" a few times and they've been able to locate and recover it. It escaped once from a boarding kennels in such a way they have asked that he is never taken back there.
It also tells them how many steps the mutt has done in a day and other useless info. That dog's daily steps are entirely limited by those of the owner!! :-)

Yeah it’s basically a gps sim in it so allows you to see via an app where the dog is and can see where its been etc and also seems to act as an activity tracker so can track calories, sleep etc etc.
I would really only be interested in the actual tracking facility of it.

Have you met my son's Spaniel?
Gorgeous dog, complete tart for human attention.
Recall, even if there are not rabbits to chase, phooey.

trainable.
Currently away in Norfolk on a dog boot camp, three spaniels in the class, one golden retriever spaniel cross. All with rock solid recalls. Gun dogs, bred to go find and bring back

I get the impression that trained dogs are the exception nowadays. I saw one walking to heel on a slack lead the other day, where the norm seems to be the owner with arm stretched and the dog pulling.
On a side note, I had to smile at a news item, where trainee guide dogs were being trained to ignore a stuffed squirrel on a remote control car.

Yes, Archie the Working Spaniel has a habit of wandering into next door's woodland. The other evening he ambled home proudly carrying a pigeon and deposited it in the kitchen. It was dead but still warm sadly. He must have caught it and necked it. His reecall is very good to be fair.

So your dog is basically out of control. What if it chases sheep?

She's on a lead so she cannot.

How dos it chase rabbits then?

Rabbits. Not sheep.
Got loose on a caravan site that was infested with rabbits.
Been more careful with her since.

Friend of mine has 3 year old Labrador. They gave in to kids incessant nagging for a dog…we’ll walk it. Yeah right. We all know that’s very rarely the case.
Has no recall whatsoever..only been on one walk with it in attendance…it pulls & pulls. Has escaped off lead twice & disappeared for hours in the countryside. Never been to training classes.
For me it just spoils the walk struggling with the darned thing for several miles…a previous gf had two Border Collies. They were an absolute delight to walk. One on either side, noses almost touching my knees as we strode out. Slept outside in a garden shed until they became old then they were allowed to sleep in the laundry room. Never ever allowed in the lounge, on a chair or heaven forbid upstairs in the house. Sadly missed by all & sundry.

Neighbours kid walks our terrier, Millie, to school every morning on weekdays. Borrowing the dog was the only way that the parents could get her to go to school without tantrums and unimaginable violence ! Always with mum or dad. Involves crossing a large park where the dog can run around but she mly has short legs so probably a five mile hike to her.
Sadly, no more, secondary school looms but Mrs T, Kim Jong Ann, will take her round the block a few times a week and there's a bigger park not far away with a secure dog area ( and a cafe ) which we can drive to.
Anyone watch Deefa the talking dog on YouTube, a bit potty mouthed but funny and well done. Sadly, he died last year. I think he was fairly local to us.

My dad pays for the Tractive subscription and rates the device / service as very good. He has two dogs which are allowed to roam fairly freely (farm in the middle of the countryside). Only one dog has the tracker but they always stick together.
I think he mainly uses it for the geo-fence alerts because they sometimes go over to the neighbouring farm to play.
