I've ruined a previous phone when it dropped down the loo when I pout it on the coistern while having a wee.
The latest one (Motorola Edge 60 Fusion) says "IP68/IP69 dust tight and water resistant (high pressure water jets; immersible up to 1.5m for 30 min)"
In Jan I'm going on a cruise round the Caribbean. Would the team think I'd be safe taking this into the water if I went swimming on a reef (which for me is floating face down with a mask on, and a pipe sticking out of the water, watching the wildlife). I feel it is risky.

Presumably you are only considering this for security reasons, i.e. not leaving your phone with your towel.
I think I'd be getting one of these

I wouldnt risk it, I dont believe the claims of phone makers in this respect, and if you drop its toast.
Invest in a go pro or clone if its for taking pictures, or a waterproof pouch if its for security reasons.

Test the water tightness before you go - if it fails you may be able to claim on insurance or the manufacturer. Avoids having phone failure whilst 3000 miles from home!

Water resistant isn’t watertight.

The other issue is salt and corrosion.

IIRC There have been instances in the past where Apple have refused warranty claims where phone has been damaged by sweat alone . (If you believe the owners).

I've dropped my phone in the bath on multiple occasions and not had an issue. I'd be very reluctant to get it anywhere near salt water unless I had the capability to rinse the USB port with fresh water as soon as possible.
Jumping into water / snorkelling etc also subjects the phone to more dynamic situations than just languishing in the bottom of a toilet bowl.

OK Good, thanks, I was thinking it was likely risky. Also the risk of letting go of it in a deeper bit when Jaws looms large.
I do have an old (maybe 5 or 6 years) cheapie Go Pro style phone which I'll test - battery may have expired. Pics were never that good though. I'm not that bothered as I may not even go swimming let alone snorkelling.
The cruise co wanted £650 for insurance for the fortnight! I just extended out existing annual policy for worldwide + cruises for £320, for as many crioses as we could do between now and expiry @ end Jan (which is none as we're in Portugal mid Sept to early Nov!)
