Sad news. I was involved on the banking side many, many years ago.

And of course this leaves the UK slightly more vulnerable to a shortage of fuels.

Interesting write up on UK refining capacity from 2022

fueloilnews.co.uk/2022/11/the-uks-refineries-past-present-and-future/

Key takeaways - UK refining capacity (now somewhat reduced) is able to supply 85% of total requirements, although there is a mix issue of petrol vs diesel vs jet fuel capacity.

Over coming years I would expect UK demand to fall as EV sales increase. Overall the market is likely to contract. Europe is on a broadly similar EV trajectory and export demand is likely to be limited.

I would not seek to defend the actions of the missing avaricious owners, but any business in a probably declining market which through lack of investment is a relatively inefficient producer is a prime candidate for financial failure.

Grangemouth & Lindsey closing in 2025.

Grangemouth closed losing several £million a week.

UK refineries are competing with West African Refineries who buy as cheap oil as you can get and can undercut anyone.

Indian Refineries buying Russian Crude at well below market price.

Security of supply is important - what will the Government do to save the remaining UK plants?

Quite sad. LOR and Conoco have adjoining refineries and a massive skyline. Generous contributors to the local communiyt. Two of the best employers in the area.
Many a massive abnormal load moved by road onto the refineries form local engineering firms and the docks over the years.
However the very hospitable security gatehouse also encompassed a very extensive subsidised food selection. Cheescake slices to die for on night shift.

Sadly works canteens are vanishingly rare nowadays.

Always liked going to see large "old-school" firms who guarded their canteens. One in the North West was free for all staff and visitors.

Some small firms in areas where it is hard to recruit are now re-introducing decent canteens as it encourages staff to stay.

Conoco off loaded their Refinery 13 years ago.

The current owner of the former Conoco Refinery is Phillips66 who also run a chain of Jet Service stations in the UK.

Phillips66 is a US Refining & Retail company based out of Houston,Tx

Agreed that Conoco looked after their workers well. Then again BP, Shell, Esso and other O&G companies and refinery owners paid good salaries, pensions, health care etc etc from bottom to top management.

Indeed you are correct.

Ironically there was a Jet fuel filling station more or less outside the refineries. One of the dearest in the area at the time. Going back to mid 80s to mid 90s.

As a matter of interest you may well recall the collision in March near the mouth of the Humber of the container ship MV Solong and the tanker MV Stena Immaculate (Wikipedia) - which was on a short-term charter to the US government as part of the US Government Tanker Security Program and was transporting 220,000 barrels (35,000,000 L; 9,200,000 US gal)[24] of Jet A-1 aviation fuel[12] in 16 secure tanks to the Port of Killingholme, Lincolnshire, for the use of the United States Air Force.
This was to offload at the pier adjacent to the refineries. However I find it strange that they were transporting refined fuel from Greece and delivering it to refineries capable of refining its own Jet A-1 fuel.

Leeds Bradford airport was reportedly having problems with its fuel supply as a result of Prax Lindsey's problems.

Aircraft either tankering in or calling for a 'splash and dash' downroute.

Usaf use jp8, which is a bit different. They were probably moving it from souda bay.

Snap!
Grangemouth BP Filling station, a few hundred yards from the BP Refinery/BP Chemicals was nearly always dearer than the other local petrol stations.

My first car in 1966 - 4 star petrol, was typically 4shillings 8d (24p per gallon) at Shell & Esso. BP Refinery Station was probably 26/27p.

Interesting comment on pump pricing, since in Hemel H in the 1980s the BP filling station directly opposite the BP Offices was the cheapest branded around.

One rule for white collar and another for the workers?
