BILs dog that they rehomed via gumtree 6 years ago had sadly to be put down couple weeks ago due to health issues.

At the weekend he was perusing gumtree and saw a 17 month old yellow lab seeking to be rehomed. Went and visited, the landlord was selling their flat and they were struggling to get another flat that allowed dogs. Guy met him in the street at bottom of flats and gave him over for £200 (huge warning sign to me)

That was Saturday and from then he has been a complete handful, not settling, quite aggressive and destroying everything. Bigger and stronger than my yellow lab. I didn’t feel at ease with it.

Come Monday they had decided it was a huge mistake, the dog obviously had issues and they were not in a position to help. Contacted Dogs Trust and other rehoming charities and filled out necessary forms and they would get back to him.

Today he was taking it a walk and it attacked him. Ripped his jacket and jeans and tried to pull him down. Thankfully got it under control but knew at this point there was no way he could take it back home. Phoned Dogs Trust and they said they would not take it in. Tried another couple who said the same.

As a last resort phoned his own vet, who he had yet to take the dog to, who said that it would be best to have it put to sleep. Drove to vets and vet came out with a muzzle to put on it which it accepted happily (big warning sign), took it in and the vet also noticed huge discolouring on its nose. The vet immediately said this was a sign of a caged dog that was kept in a cage all day. Nose was rubbed away from sticking it through the cage.

Dog was put to sleep. BIL is gutted, tried his best but realised he had been stitched up and no idea if any of the story he had been given was accurate. Interestingly the vet never scanned for a chip which I assumed he would have ( technically BIL had nothing to say the dog was his).

Hopefully he will wait a good while before looking for another dog!

A sad but understandable decision Bobby.

I believe all dogs and cats are required to be 'chipped'. Pity it wasn't scanned to see if it was registered to an owner and perhaps had been dog napped.

Who (in their right mind) gets a pet from Gumtree??

Two of the many dogs I've been owned over the decades were 'destroyed'.

Rover (hehe) came from Battersea back when we lived in sowf lunden, he bit my sister one evening when she was visiting us, then he bit me (still got the scar!) one morning.

I took 'im back to Battersea and asked for him to be 'put to sleep', they were reluctant at first 'til I said "howl about if he bites a child at his next home".

Next for the chop was Arnie (hehe!) he was a GSD who came from a GSD specific rescue centre in norf Cornwall. We lived in an isolated barn perversion on Bodmin Moor at the time and I thought it would be a good? idea to get something a bit useful, like.

He bit my friend? quite badly on his calf. Next up was when tried to have a go at the chap who came to service my ride on mower.

I took Arnie to the RSPCA centre in Newquay and phoned a week later to ask how he was getting on, I was actually, erm, gutted when they told me they had 'put him down'.

I would have Percy vered with him if I had known they would have done that - what else did you think then you 'king idiot.

Arnie belonged to a woman in N. Cornwall who treated like a baby - until she decided to stick him in kennels while she went on an extended tour of the USA, poor Arnie was never the same afterward which is why she had him rehomed. The rescue centre didn't tell me this (liars!)

Poor Arnie, I often think of him :(

That.

Exactly.

There are plenty of properly run channels for rehoming dogs that have become a problem for or burden on their owners. My son's Spaniel came from just such a source. We think she was a covid pup who in canine adolescence was too boisterous for a family with very young children. Not in the least aggressive still less bity but jumping up, doing zoomies and not following human dictates about respecting personal space!!

She's still very 'bouncy' but an absolute sweety with people. I wouldn't leave her alone with our nearly four year old grandson but they're OK together without microscopic supervision.

She's still a beggaroo with other dogs though. Better than she was but has a particular issue with 'flat faced' breeds - who knows what prior experience might account for that.

Unless you can train it properly you'd be mad to get a dog, period. Friend was telling me the other day he rarely sees his daughter since she got some sort of Staffordshire cross thing. It's immensely strong and drags her around, and is hell in the house if anyone visits. She can't leave it because it howls.

How she endures it I don't know.

Our dog is now an old lady. 14 years old. Mostly blind and deaf.

She still has a quality of life though and the vet confirms that she is in no discomfort.

She has "zoomies" after a bath, but is otherwise relaxed, finding sunspots around the house when it's cold or cold surfaces when it's hot.

Coming for a cuddle when it suits and of course dog walks.

She absolutely loves car journeys and will be the first to the car when the opportunity arises.

She gets tired on long walks and is currently on holiday with Mrs Z in the west country with a "dog-pram".

I dread the day when we will have to make that inevitable decision.

Totally agree. I’m not a dog person but I sort of understand how a well trained dog might be something you could enjoy owning if not for me. Far too many downsides.

Why anybody would want an untrained yappy dog that is possibly a danger to themselves and their family is a complete mystery

My mate and his wife are dog sitting their daughter's 2 Dobermen this week and into the weekend, at their house.

He was once dog owner but dislikes these ones, and really wanted to refuse to help out but it was a "special occasion"

I'm looking forward to the debrief but I gather that one has already bitten his wife, presumably not too hard though.

Why anyone in their right mind would have anything to do with a Staffie or anything related to that sort of breed.

We'eve all heard stories of "it wouldn't hurt a fly", only to.............................

Zeddo probably wouldn't agree, but I trained my dogs to the doctrine of Barbara Woodhouse and never had a problem.

A difficult but right decision :-(

"Who (in their right mind) gets a pet from Gumtree"

I did, my much loved Working Cocker came from one of the free advert papers, possibly Loot. He was great, came with "papers" aged 18 months. He lived with us for the next 12 years. He had "quirks" but I loved him and he had a decent life. Difficult to fill the dog-shaped space he left. The current WC came from Spanial Aid , according to his papers he's a distant relative of the first one. He has quirks as well, but over the last twelve months we appear to be bonding well, espcially recently. He now runs free in the garden all he wants/needs/likes, still not at all keen on the car. He's going with us by train from Llandudno Junction to Blaenau Ffestiniog - bit of a test run really. Free travel for old gits which is great.

Re Gumtree.

When we got both our dogs, the Dogs Trust refused to allow us to adopt as we didn’t meet their criteria. So both were bought direct from breeders.

BIL had a 100% success rate with Gumtree and had a fantastic dog for a good few years.

Our Springer was bought as a pup. He turned out to be a fine dog. Dealer was localish, saw him with his mother (who was lovely) - can't remember where he was advertised, possibly on one of the breeder websites.

Checked with Mrs RP - we found him on Loot as well !
