 Walking and Clothing - Bromptonaut
Presently on the Isle of Harris which, so far this week, has been as far as it can be from its Caribbean emulation mode. Wet and VERY windy.

Out in the car yesterday up onto Lewis. Went beyond Stornoway to Tolsta parking by the Bridge to Nowhere for those who know the place. Sunshine but wind that made keeping car doors under control a challenge. Thought I'd walk the 300 metres to the shoreline to see what I could see.

Got onto the sand but so exposed to wind I was at risk of being skittled. Turned back to the car, now walking directly into the wind; progress slow.

Suddenly a squall hit with even more wind and pelted with rain and hail.

Was wearing a walkers twill shirt over a tee and with an wind but not waterproof bomber jacket and my usual Rohan Bags. In less than two minutes I was soaked and frozen silly but fortunately nearly back at the car. Obviously given location at sea level and in an air temperature of around 11 degrees, strong wind but not with a winter type chill.

Made me think that if I'd been a thousand feet or so higher, a bit cooler and a distance to the car how quickly I'd have been in trouble.

If I'd been planning a proper walk I'd have had a cagoule with a fleece under and trousers that shed water better and provided more insulation.

Made me realise (again) the risk people going on the fells in street clothes etc take and how often they need help.

As someone who spent a lot of my working life outdoors, a Gor Tex jacket, Berghaus overtrousers and a pair of deriboots will keep you warm and dry all day long whatever the weather.

Around £250 for the lot and they will last a couple of decades.

Not for myself, but I bought Miss Z a Northface jacket when she was at school for the Duke of Edinburgh awards.

She has just replaced it for the same as it has lasted 16 years, worn daily, including up mountains around the world.

Having completed 100 miles of theNorth Wales Pilgrim path in all seasons I guess I'm qualified to comment !

Summer wear is a Wolfskin anorak shell, a light fleecy motorcycling layer, tee-shirt. Craghopper trousers, feet have old schoolish Gortex boots (Rohan or Brasher) proper Sealskin socks.

Winter: Woolly cap, shirt (Probably el-cheapo Mountain Warehouse ones) either a RAB ultraslight Polyloft jacket with the Wolfskin, a good quality down jacket and either jeans with Berghaus water-proofs. Boots, socks as above

These or a combo have taken me through Eryri's fantastic landscape this last spring - summer season is now here and I'll travel light - but keeping dry. Been an awesome walk from Holywell to Clynnog Fawr would highly recommend it. We're both busy people and the walk has been done in bite sized chunks. Some incredible scenery and other memories

If the conditions were that bad I'd be thinking twice about whether it was safe and sensible for me (and my potential rescuers) to go fell walking before wondering what to wear!!

We are both check out the risk. The funny thing is on what was the driest and warmest day of the year last April, it was pouring with rain at the finish line for that day as we doubled back to the starting point. The one day I didn't take waterproofs !

We're both reasonably sensible with our hill walking and boots are chosen with care for the terrain/weather ahead ! :-)

As some grizzly old hill walker said to me "There is never the wrong weather, merely the wrong clothing". My replay was "I'll wear the right clothing - shorts and tee, and chose the location and time with the right weather"

Zeddo…couldn’t agree more. I’ve been an outdoorsy type since Boy Scout days but now if it’s raining and forecast to continue, I don’t set off.
Currently sat on my hotel terrace looking across to Toledo. 3 course evening meal, plus amuse buche and a glass of wine, €22. Still 26C dining outside.
Was in Avila last night.
I’ve brought full waterproofs for my Picos 10 day trip…Monday was a full day walking in the mist, lots of mud, needed a fleece midway through our walk, but these things happen in the mountains.
Too warm for strenuous walking now

My reply would have been 'Malaga. Shorts and flip flops. From the pool to the bar.'

(In two weeks time).
