There seems to be something of a pattern to public healthcare across the world (all articles are 2024 or 2025)

France www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-64216269

Greece www.europeandatajournalism.eu/cp_data_news/healthcare-in-greece-the-ongoing-ruination-of-a-public-service/

Italy worldcrunch.com/business-finance/healthcare-in-italy/

Portugal www.euronews.com/2025/02/13/portuguese-hospitals-hang-by-a-thread-with-closed-ae-departments-lack-of-staff-and-long-qu#:~:text=Portugal's%20national%20health%20service%20is,competition%20with%20the%20private%20sector.

Spain - www.cicae.com/en/crisis-in-the-spanish-health-care-system-lack-of-physicians-and-limited-access-to-medical-training/

US www.ajmc.com/view/how-to-save-the-us-health-care-system-from-a-complete-collapse

The list goes on. Most of South America, lots of Africa...

Even in Oz it seems that the grass isn't always greener, despite the exodus of healthcare staff from here www.bbc.com/news/articles/cnv56q82vnro

It doesn't seem to matter which flavour of government.

I suppose it's obvious as the issues are fairly common - often underfunding, aging population and ever higher expectations.

I'm not sure there is an answer...

They probably is, but it'd be unpalatable...

How about:

Rationing based on job / calories burnt to prevent obesity and reduce obesity related illnesses.

Compulsory exercise classes to keep hearts and lungs fitter and reduce mobility issues.

Alcohol rations - no one drinks to oblivion / needing hospital treatment.

Speed limiters in all vehicles to monitor speeds and keep vehicles to the limit - this is happening?

Ban on ultra-processed foods.

Proper home-economics classes in schools teaching all pupils how to cook. (It was great when Miss Z did hers - would get some excellent meals practiced at home before she had to do them in class.)

Govt, taking shares in drugs companies through sovereign wealth funds to share in the profit that they make and re-invest in health care - with a guarantee that the next lot in wont sell the family silver again.

I do wonder if charging for parking has added to the obesity problem. Rather than pay for parking down town, people will now shop on line - not getting the exercise from walking from shop to shop?

etc. etc.

Local authorities refusing permission for continuing growth of fast food outlets. Although it seems a percentage may be a front for money laundering.

Demand for healthcare grow rapidly as populations age

Drugs and sophisticated treatments get ever more costly

With ageing payments and declining birth rates there are fewer taxpayers

We all have to pay a lot lot more for healthcare or accept a lower standard of healthcare.

Rather than 6% on General Practice and >90% on hospitals...

Indeed, Free health care has worked too well, and now we cant afford it. It might have seemed a good idea and affordable when we all died at 60 and sired 5 kids. Now the sums dont add up.

Perhaps we should encourage procreation with tax breaks.
