>> Why is there no back up power supply for such a large piece of critical

Reports suggest that there are multiple grid connections to LHR. The area supplied through the Hayes substation is mostly 'old' LHR ie parts of the Central Area. T4 and T5 are said to have supplies.
I think closing the whole thing is a function of when the incident happened ie when only long haul flights were in the air and could be diverted or turned back. Better to have one simple message, it's shut, then the chaos of having it half open with all the mixed messages and potential for misunderstandings involved.
If the central area is without power then, even if there's traction current to the railway, lack of lighting etc on stations would hobble the tubes and buses.
It would be interesting to see what would have happened if the incident had occurred during the morning arrivals peak.

Demand led pricing is effectively an auction. I wonder how many bidders there were for those seats?
Will the purchasers travel insurer pay without quibble I wonder?
Ryanair have some extra service between Stansted and Dublin today and tomorrow.
Depends on the urgency to get back I guess.
My first port of call would be to see if there were any beds on the Caledonian sleeper. On my bucket list to do!

We were. Mrs B is one of the people who paid before the launch for various goodies including a bottle from the first batch.
