Lucky Break / Lucky Fall - zippy
Miss Z has been doing a week on call, rather than in her learning dept.

A young man came in unconscious after a severe fall at work.

Usual scans etc. were undertaken. Broken bones set.

Blood test taken. There were abnormal readings.

Scan done and it turns out he had testicular cancer. Spotted early enough to be treatable. Operation done with his consent when he regained consciousness.

If he didn't have the fall, things could have been very different.

Lucky indeed. If he'd gone to his GP with symptoms, would he have been given an immediate blood test?

Don't know, but GPs seem more keen to get tests done now.

Miss Z wasn't involved in much of it because she doesn't do bones. She occasionally helps in A&E though often helps out when they are busy.

She didn't order the bloods but did look at the results and ordered the scan, which was a chore as the radiography dept. had got new instructions and decided that only consultants could order scans and there were no consultants available. Even when a consultant was called the radiology dept told him it he was from the wrong dept. It turned in to a bit of a farce.

She didn't do the subsequent op.

Brother was diagnosed as having prostate cancer, I requested a PSA test, heard nothing and after a couple of weeks, repeated the request, heard nothing! Made myself a nuisance and got a blood test - first appointment available was three weeks away, I'm going next week.
Got a second blood test notice!

>>heard nothing...

I guess GP practices vary.

'If he'd gone to his GP with symptoms...'

Men don't like going to the doctor, that would have taken some balls.

I bet that happens quite often when a scan is carried out. My friend the leather craftsman had a scan for his prostate, they discovered he had an aortic aneurysm.

I’ve taken a friend for radiography re his prostrate cancer. Whilst waiting I read a leaflet, had one of the symptoms so contacted my surgery for a chat.
Doctor thought it worthwhile flexing his digit where the sun don’t shine whilst I was there, and a blood test ( PSA) to follow soon.
I thought PSA was an automotive group. You live & learn.

Not "prostrate" - that means something different. (A common confusion, though.)

PSA = prostate-specific antigen, a protein produced by the prostate gland. High levels of it suggest a problem.

How do I know? I have an enlarged prostate (not uncommon), as revealed by scans as well as the insertion of a finger, and am regularly monitored. Also, an elderly friend of mine has prostate cancer which is controlled by medication - one of those situations frequently alluded to by the medical profession whereby a man will die "with" prostate cancer and not "of" it.

Silly me...prostate and prostrate.
Don’t know how that happened...probably alcohol during an almost dry January. And a tiring 7+ hour walk in the snow.

It's a common mistake/confusion.

Lost count of number of times I've had clients or their relatives speak of prostrate cancer.

My prostate has been looked at about 15 times in the last 4 years, in passing as it were as the cystoscope travels into my bladder. Sometimes it a bit tight and needs a cough to aid its passage, sometimes it slips through at the speed of a Eurostar into the channel tunnel.

I had the finger where the sun don't shine in my 30s when I had this idea of having a full (paid for) health check.

The Doc asked me if I wanted it plus the ball check, and I thought, well, I've paid for it, I might as well have it.
