We tend to only take one week holidays to sunnier climes as MIL looks after our lab and a week is probably the limit.
Toying with the idea of driving to France and taking the dog with us and we could then do an extended holiday. Maybe 2 or 3 weeks.
Would also be an opportunity to go my first “driving” holiday with my BMW X1 that I got on 2019!!

Anyone here do it and what do I need to take into account? Pet passport? Travel insurance for the dog? Lots more stops on long journeys I guess.
Assume channel tunnel is simpler than Ferries?
How dog friendly is France in general?

My lab doesn’t like hot weather so would prob need to be careful what areas we go to and when.

Any input appreciated.

I haven't looked into it but I think I heard that you can take a dog from UK to Ireland without a pet passport. That might save a bit of hassle and avoid overheating the hound!

I've a motoring 'grand tour' of Ireland planned for next year. Ours will be hotel based which might preclude dogs but you might find a cottage rental that doesn't.

I don't think I could travel with a dog however. Add the extra complication into travel, meals and accommodation would make it too much like hard work.

I think that's probably why the Venn diagram circles for caravanning and dog ownership seem to overlap so much.

Kennels?

Pet passport is dead, now replaced by an Animal Health Certificate, at much greater cost and hastle. You need an AHC for Northern Ireland

Uk sporting dog owners who compete a lot in europe/Ni/Eire now get a one off UK AHC, travel to Northern Ireland, get a EU pet passport, and use that for a years euro pet travel.

Err no, its fallen through the red tape cracks as its all about the animal, not the owner.

The AHC is only valid for up to 10 days for exit from the UK, 4 months for return to UK.

A Pet passport issued in the EU(Ni) is valid for the pets life, you just need it stamped to say your rabies vacinations are up to date. In NI it costs about 100 quid. Ironically a UK vet can stamp your EU pet passport to say the vaccinations are up to date.

Cant guarantee how long it will remain as a loophole, DEFRA, has by the nature of its business, the ability to change rules and procedures without too much oversight from parliament.

Pet passport is now dead. You need an Animal Health certificate

Your vet will charge you between £90 -£250 quid for the certificate PLUS the cost of the vacinations on top

You need to travel through approved ports.
