Our oven tripped the mains when tried to use the non-fan elements in the oven for the first time in many years. Got chatting with the repairman and he says that in a multi element oven you need to use all elements occasionally. If you don’t the chalky mineral stuff inside the unused elements degrade from general air moisture or steam from baking with the other elements.

I’d never thought of that but it makes sense. It was an expensive lesson, even buying the elements myself online the overall cost was £200 (£125 of which was for the parts).

I fitted the fan element myself during lockdown for a similar amount to you. It only lasted a year so I got the repair man in to sort it when it blew. He said I’d done the replacement right but that cheap elements seldom last.

When the latest non-fan ones failed he said to buy OEM ones (it’s a s***) and he wasn’t wrong when he said they’d be expensive. Not good value when even at s*** prices I could get a whole new cooker for under a grand.

The swear filter doesn’t like SM. EG. Must be a Red Dwarf fan?

Warning this post contains suggestions that should not be attempted by anyone who does not fully understand the risks involved. If you have to ask questions you should not do it.

This suggestion was made by a 'professional' electrician to a regular DIY punter. (A relation).

If the oven trips the RCD after a period of non use, just disconnect the earth lead from the oven and turn it on.
No mention of the risks involved, or whether/when to reconnect.

PS it did work.
