Came across this one today...

Only 50p
Caught me unawares but for some reason, probably the charming toll booth guy who didn't mind waiting whilst I fished my wallet out of the boot, the experience left me with a smile on my face.

It's usually rather more efficient than Dartford as well (until someone has to fish their wallet out from the boot - though the, now, two lanes helps with that). ;-)
|
Is that what the people in the car behind you shouted? ;-)
|
Luckily it wasn't busy!
Just had a look at the accounts...
Nothing filed since 2002

It's an "Unregistered Company" (and therefore, I think, not subject to the Companies Act).
It may be suspect that at some point, it was realised that there wasn't a legal requirement to publish accounts, but I think they are (now) posted under the group accounts of The General Estates Company..

I remember reading a story, maybe not totally factual, of some car park somewhere, maybe a football stadium or the like, that it took a change of ownership to realise that the guys who had been collecting parking dues for years actually had no authority to do so!
Wouldn’t know what to google to find the actual true story.

Snopes is often good for that kind of thing.

25 years? who maintained the car park? Clearly it wouldnt have lasted 25 years without some investment,

Back in the early 90s myself and a colleague did a sponsored drive around all the Police HQs in England, Scotland, Wales, NI, Jersey, Guernsey, and IoM. It was on behalf of a terminally ill colleague.
We planned and secured sponsorship for everything,- Car, fuel, mobile phone, accommodation, ferry and air fares. Everything !!
Excccceeeept this flippin bridge :))

Jeez: It would only have been about 3p! ;-)
(The rates have gone up relatively steeply recently, and pre- about 2002, they weren't subject to VAT - that increase in itself caused some furore).

Why was your wallet in the boot?

Laptop bag was in there. Was in a hotel that morning and threw everything in to the bag.
Also, when I can, I try to put the phones in the boot - it removes the temptation to use them "non hands free".

I have some friends who live in Eling. I always drive in the back way from Marchwood, Always get the time wrong when leaving, (its not 24 hours) and get caught by the Eling Tide Mill toll

Tax free income and depending on where you read the article, some suggest that the owner is exempt from all income and capital gains tax. This article suggests the tax free status relates to the bridge only.

I think there's a toll bridge in Oxfordshire that's 20p?

Plus the Kingsland Bridge in Shrewsbury is 20p

That's the one I was thinking of.

There's the Warburton toll bridge just West of Cadishead where my maternal family's roots are. It's a rather nice high cantilever over the Manchester Ship Canal. But wait ! It isn't, it's actually a toll over the bridge which used to cross the River Mersey, now dried up as a result of being diverted into the canal. The cantilever is a few hundred yards up the lane
It doesn't cost a lot but many think it's just a nuisance...the small pay booth was torched some years ago. It must have cost 19 years income to build a new one.
It's a particular nuisance for motor cyclists, it was 12p when I last biked over. I used to have the money in my glove but then had to stop on the other side to put the glove back on.. Bikers who didn't know in advance hold the traffic up with all the rigmarole....I don't know why it isn't free, like the Mersey Tunnel..Probably less than £1 a day lost to Peel Holdings who are worth squillians of quid !
