Mike Lynch the founder of Autonomy, who won his court case in the USA recently for Fraud is missing after a yacht he was on sank in the med last night.

By pure coincidence, his co-accused, Autonomy's vice president of Finance Stephen Chamberlain was run over and killed the day before.

What are the odds!

The car driver who hit Mr Chamberlain was a 49 year old woman driving a Corsa who remained at the site of the collision.

Not exactly a James Bond/CIA/FRB (KGB of old) type assassination.

I believe it is just coincidence but it is still quite some coincidence, and so soon after the case against them finished.

I recall some years ago York Minster was struck by lightning shortly after making some sort of religious statement, I’m not religious, but that made me wonder.

Confirmation a short while ago that Lynch and his daughter have died and that their bodies have been recovered.

His yacht, the Bayesian, had a 245ft mast. The speculation is that this would have effectively acted as a sail and the waterspout would have knocked the boat over pushing the boat into the water. Being a hot and humid night hatches and doors were left open and the water rushed in and the boat sank almost immediately

Now the confirmation of their deaths is here, it's very sad

Yes the mast was 75 meters, designed to carry many hundreds of square meters of sail in 30 knot winds, which would far exceed the windforce experienced in this case on a slim mast.

However, was it rigged for high winds, was the keel deployed? Seems it wasnt. And yes it probably wasn't battoned down with water tight doors closed, probably went over far enough to ship some water in, and it went downhill quickly from there.

Keel was not deployed according to today's paper.
Hatches / windows open?
That looks like the boat rolled and water did the rest.

No doubt the boat will be raised and a full investigation carried out. Speculating as to the cause is a bit pointless.

Sudden storm arising from nowhere in benign conditions?

You can see how it happens.

Benign conditions?

My understanding is that the weather was already pretty rough, though the waterspout or whatever it was constituted a sudden extra-violent event.

One theory is that the waterspout dumped water onto the boat and through the open hatches.

Apparently the wife + baby were sleeping on the deck - so unlikely to have been that rough?

I went on holiday with this company a few years ago...just 9 passengers on the gulet, 2 Dutch, 1 German, 3 Turkish, 2 S Africans and myself.
I knew there must have been a reason we all slept out on deck at night....great holiday.

All meals on deck, a few laps of the boat before brekkie, snorkelling, kayaks, windsurfers. Unlimited beer & wine, although drank in moderation until sunset. All the passengers met and chatted with the captain after brekkie and decided where to sail to each day, where to anchor for lunch, and for how long, and if the wind was kind we went under sail. Unlike the vast majority of similar companies.
