A convicted criminal has turned up in Australia, so nothing new there?

I have always been a bit confused by this.
He didn't commit any crime in America and is not an American citizen - are the USA claiming worldwide jurisdiction for their espionage act?
I also understand that the New York Times, Guardian (and others) editors and journalists could also be arrested over the wiki leaks cases but haven't been.
An MP was being interviewed the other day and said Americans in America had 1st Amendment rights but Assange didn't? How does that work?
The biggest crime is that in one of the wiki leaks articles, the helicopter crew seem to have gotten away with murder.
