I'm surprised too.

Not that it will make any difference to the pro-Trumpers, for whom their idol cannot lose an election. In the same way they will explain everything away by saying the court system is a sham, run by the Democrats, so it doesn't count.

It's the Humpty-Dumpty world of American politics and I'm glad I don't live there.

The really important question is whether the guilty verdict will affect US voting intentions.

I thought he was guilty, his ex-associate's testimony was brutal, but wasn't sure what the verdict would be - juries can be strange beasts.

He could actually go to prison for this.

He could still win the election and be in the absolutely mad position to pardon himself!

He cant’t actually. He has been convicted of the crimes by the State of New York and the President has no powers to pardon State crimes , only Federal ones.

>>He can't actually...

Thanks, thought it applied to all cases as presidents had pardoned others when leaving office.

He did, according to Ms Daniels.

The loser here is America. They have two candidates for what is probably the most powerful and influential position on earth. One is senile, can barely utter a string of words, cant walk or stand up. The other is Crooked, corrupt, divisive, racist and misogynistic. One of them will get elected.

They have had mostly good presidents, from both sides of the political spectrum, how in the space of a decade can it all descend into this? who or what is to blame? Money? Social Media? The electoral / state system or the American people?

Probably yes to all of those.

Mind you, politics has become increasingly polarised in Europe too and polarisation is the key to it all.

The US has been the global superpower in military and economic terms for 125+ years - it overtook the UK as the largest manufacturer of goods in 1880. Europe challenged but did not exceed US dominance through the EU. China is now their equal and likely to overtake them.

Empires fail - Roman, Greek, Chinese, British etc. Being supplanted it is challenging - the older generation, of which Trump and Biden are products, formed their views 60-80 years ago.

They are both in denial - Trump more so than Biden. Make America great again is an empty rallying call, not a realistic prospect. There is a new world order on the way - the US may retain equal influence with China and (in due course) probably India.

The UK went through similar traumas, crystallised post WW2 when the empire was factually no more and the country broke. There are still those who think the "great" should precede Britain - and cannot come to terms with the reality.

Trumps hold on reality is tenuous - he simply cannot believe that he is capable of wrong doing, any more than he could envision the China surpassing the US or a court on finding him guilty other than rigged or a conspiracy.

One can only hope that if he does get the keys to the White House back again, those around him can control his worst potential excesses.

You can certainly make the argument that Biden has been rather a good president. Economy is doing well, huge number of jobs created. He is certainly old and slowing down but not senile. Probably should have stood aside but he or his successor surely better than Trump.

I don't think it will make much of a difference to the GE. For every undecided that decides not to vote, a Republican will make more of an effort to vote.

People have long since made their minds up about trump.

His team and advisors are doing well*, yes.

Not sure what your idea of senility is, but going vacant in public, standing dumbstruck mid speech, stumbling and falling over nothing, certainly meets a lot of the clinical symptoms.

*and lets be honest, thats what you want from an administration. And if the figurehead and messenger was better, Trump wouldnt have a hope in hell.

He called the judge corrupt. Can he be prosecuted for that?
trump guilty on all charges. - Zero
As it was said outside court and after the trial, not sure contempt applies.
trump guilty on all charges. - zippy
Slander surely?

Perhaps the judge could get the USA equivalent of an injunction to stop him spouting on about it.

Of course DT would likely find that very difficult to do and could end up in clink for breaking the injunction.

That would be hilarious.

The enduring problem is the debasement of US democracy that has occurred basically since Trump got involved and senior Republicans abandoned their integrity. The Supreme court although nominated by the ruling party was generally confirmed almost unanimously by the Senate. Now it is seriously politicised and the Senate votes on party lines.

Trump has made it clear he will politicise the civil service so he can sack anybody deemed woke, and change the constitution if necessary so he can behave dictatorially and if he gets his way stay in power indefinitely.

If the law stops him, some of his supporters are prepared to take up arms and some commentators think there is a material possibility of civil war.
trump guilty on all charges. - sooty123
I don't think any of that is remotely likely to happen.
trump guilty on all charges. - Manatee
It's being a remote possibility is worrying enough.

Civil war sounds extreme but if you substitute insurrection then it's something's that has already occurred.

What I can't understand is that it is also the collapse of the Republican party, ultimately. Yet none of the senior office holders.will stand up and say "we have to take the nomination off this guy".
trump guilty on all charges. - sooty123
There's along way between what happened on last time and a full blown civil war.

Do you mean the way Manatee beleives Trump will act or the risk of civil war?

Staying in power as a dictator and civil are both, to me, extremely remote possibilities. Sounds like a conspiracy theory tbh.

>>Civil war....

That's a longshot, surely?

Anyway, it's a sure-fire way to WW3 - I can't imagine any major nuclear power wanting a group of nutcases to have access to one of the largest nuclear a***nals and the consequences therein.

If Biden gets re elected he will be surrounded by advisers who will make all the big decisions.
If Trump gets in he will be shooting from the hip, gord help us all.
trump guilty on all charges. - Manatee
I don't think Biden lacks capacity but I think his people have worked out that he tires easily. I know how he feels.

His judgement is said to be sound, but I suppose they would say that.

Arguably his presidency has been very successful, and he hasn't been a pushover for Ukraine or Israel either by some accounts.
