 Germany, eh! - tyrednemotional
I'm currently in the German Alps in the motorhome, in a small village called Obermaiselstein. Arrived yesterday and in conversation was told the Feurwehr were having a do today. It happens to be Himmelfahrt, which it seems coincides with Vatertag. (or vv), and the Feurwehr are having a Vaterfest.

As we walked round yesterday, the fire station was being set up with mobile bars, benches and tables, food stalls, mobile toilets and a stage.

After a 12 mile walk in the mountains today, at 18:30 we headed up to see if they needed any help with the beer (it started at 10:00). It was bouncing (only partly due to a bouncy castle) with an oompah band playing. Not one bit of the fire station was occupied by anything but beer and wurst stalls, or rather inebriated people. The partying was spilling out over the main road. The fire engine was parked up a side street opposite.

I sincerely hope they didn't get a shout!

I can't imagine anything quite so adventurous happening in the UK.

BTW, the beer was good and cheap, I imagine the oompah band was only one of those.

Sounds fantastic. Very very jealous. A few years ago ( several actually) we spent 10 days touring southern Germany…stayed around lake Tittisee for a while before south to Freiburg and beyond. . Great scenery, food, beer, plenty of walking.
Used up all my 90/180 this year but plans to return next May/June for 2 months…Austria & Bavarian Alps, then Dolomites.
Sounds like you’re living the dream

Having a motorhome is a significant capital investment, but if you like exploring, particularly walking or cycling, it really can be worthwhile.

We're dodging the showers, but so far have been lucky via Tournai, small town France, the Black Forest, Ulm, and now Obermaiselstein. Cost varying between €5.60 and €22 per night.

We may end up in the Dolomites, or on one of our favourite stops above Titisee on this trip, but we're trying to seek out new places, weather depending.

Been good so far, but busy now as this is a BH "bridge" weekend.

I was in Germany in the early '70s at Easter. Don't know what their celebration was, but it involved a parade where the greatest cheers were for a Hitler representation!

Great part of Europe. My daughter did a year in Munich as part of the Erasmus scheme. Spent some time around there.

Was walking in the Rhineland Palatinate region a few years back. Talking to an old man resting on a bench, he asked where I came from. I told him Birmingham. Tears welled up in his eyes and he said he had been to Birmingham once - in his time in the Luftwaffe.
