I suspect whoever turned him away, were delighted with themelves. Isn't there some form of 'yes I know who you are' identification, or would they turn away their own family for the same reason?

They had no choice but to turn him away.

They may have taken pleasure in so doing.

They would anyway be very aware the press would delight in reporting an electoral process failure - major criticism of election management, accusations of favouritism, and the possibility that it was stunt deliberately engineered by Boris (motives unclear)

There is a tiny risk of a stunt by the press or media using a look-alike. I am not aware of any mischievous impersonations in the flesh but there have been several phone call pranks over the years.
