Glasses (Spectacles Frame) Woes - zippy
My Dunhill frames are metal with plastic covering the part of the arms that goes over the ears.

Today the plastic on one of the arms has started to deteriorate and come away in clumps. About 2/3rds of an inch has gone in a matter of minutes - almost like an acid attack.

I won't be able to get to an optician to fix them until next week.

Shouldn't be a problem - but the metal under the plastic is toothed like a saw and it's painfully cutting in to my ear.

Glasses are 30 months old and cost £400. Not impressed. Would expect them to last longer!

I'll find some gaffer tape when I get home.

I assume you mean the bit that goes over the ear? skin oils make them go a bit funny.

As a temporary fix, SA has the answer, bit of heat shrink over it.

Spectacle frames must be the biggest rip off going. If you can get a pair of readers in the pound shop with reasonable looking frames I don't see how you have to pay several hundreds for a pair that do no more than look slightly more stylish.

You have to do it 'cos the wife tells you to RoR !

My last ones were £400+ from Boots. They are a waste of money. I asked for some stronger readers...no change ! I asked for no coating....the coating I didn't want in the first place was applied and is now so scratched that when the sun is behind me I have to put my old ones on...which are no different in power !

The young latino optician was arrogant and unpleasant telling me I was not to drive any more on the basis that I couldn't read the bottom 2 lines on the chart with my left eye. I told him it was the DVLA's decision, not his. I got the coating off the readers with IPA followed by thinners but I haven't done the bi-focals yet.

Next time it will be a local indy in the village here.

I know exactly how much designer frames cost to buy from the Far East and the process involved as I have a client who designs and manufactures them and sells them to opticians.

Basically the brand owners don't want to design or make frames. Frame manufactures do. The frame manufacturer goes to the design house with designs and get them approved with a licence to manufacture and pay a royalty.

Frames are made in the Far East, still HK but Vietnam also.

They buy quality ones in for about USD$9 and sell to opticians for GBP£15.

That may go someway to explain why when you've been through the conveyor of your annual eye test and a prescription issued you are encouraged and guided towards the frame section. Particularly notable at some of the larger chain Opticians.

I've been using Asda opticians for the last few years. I have varifocals and get two pairs a year for £120. Usually one plain and one sunglasses, though I'm becoming a bit overwhelmed with new specs so I had some computer ones last year. I believe they come with some sort of coating but as usual you can pay more to get better.

They have what you call "designer" ones for a higher price (still not excessive) but I'd prefer to not look like a walking advert or wannabee model for some pretentious fashion house.

Two days ago Mrs C used Vision Express in Tesco for her eye test (free) and chose two pairs of readers. Total cost including lenses, was £50, which I thought good.

My last pair, varifocals, was nearer £700.

Can't find them now but a few years ago I had excellent service from a specialist outfit somewhere near Southend. Booked on line posted specs to them, back in 48 hours. Both were broken arms.

Have you any heatshrink tubing or self amalgamating tape in the garage? Might be slightly more elegant than gaffer tape.

Apparently this code MSE37BAR will discount Barbour specs from £135 to £37 at Specky Four Eyes.

Money Saving Expert code, no idea how long it might last.
