My ex's washer dryer has been broken for 3 weeks with no sign of their landlord's plumber coming to fix it. As she has to wash my son's clothes in it, and as they now have a two-week old baby, I felt a pang of guilt so i offered to take a look. Apparently something went "bang" mid-wash cycle one day and it just stopped, full of water.

Switched it on, found that the programmer dial clicks round to the next step continually, whilst the water fill operates every time a "program start" setting is reached. The "drain and spin" settings, however, produce no pumping and the drum motor does not operate at all. This happens whether the door is open or closed.

Drained the standing water into a bowl. Removed, cleaned and replaced fluff filter. Took the top and back off, couldn't see any obvious melted connectors or wiring, the drive belt was as it should be and I could rotate the drum (and hence the motor) by hand in the normal fashion with no bearing noise.

Upon inspection, the grey rubber seal around the door aperture had a 2" vertical split next to the door catch - I removed the switch panel and the front of the machine and took the door interlock switch out but it seems dry (with the expected amount of dust and fluff on the top), undamaged and furthermore designed to withstand a leaky seal (the switch is purely mechanical, with the electrical connections on the side furthest from the drum). I tested the machine with the door interlock switch in both positions, with no change in the result.

I'm stumped, has anyone got any experience of this or any idea what it might be? A quick Google leads me to think it's a sensor somewhere confusing the brain.

Is this the same ex who bled you dry?

Afraid so, but I still can't see my little boy in dirty clothes.

Try witholding the rent and/or telling him that it will be repaired and he will get the bill! Is he actually required to repair it, in the terms of the letting? Get the Health Visitor involved - there are aspects of the health of the baby which might come into play if the washer is Kaput!

If it is not pumping out have you checked the pump/ pump motor?

Is the pump a separate item ? ie not driven from drum motor.

If it is getting warm to the touch, and not pumping it is a good indication that the impellor is jammed. Piece of glass or cocktail stick is a favorite in dishwashers.

The door switch has isolated everything on every machine I've had. It seems there's something seriously wrong if the machine attempts to fill with water with the door open.

I've no experience of combined washer/dryers, but assume they have a lint filter for the drying cycle, similar to stand alone tumble dryers. Does that need cleaning?

Any instruction book for user serviceable parts?

No lint filter for the drying cycle as far as I'm aware - the drain filter was pretty well clogged but I've seen worse ones still working.

The drain pump appeared to be separate to the drum motor, but when it should have been pumping there was no discernible "gnnnn" noise like you'd expect. The constantly stepping programmer dial (approx one step per second) makes me think it's more likely to be a frazzled ECU, but I was hoping there was another answer that may have been obvious to someone who'd seen it before.

Perky: Thanks, I will advise them to involve the HV, for their new child's sake as much as for my child's. As far as I'm aware the washer comes with their (privately rented) house - it's an integrated model and it looks older than their tenancy. It's an "executive" rental, although clearly not with an "executive" landlord. Not sure I'd want to be the source of the idea to withhold rent payment - I'd be on dodgy territory if anything went awry there. I'd have kicked up more of a fuss by now if it were me, but there you go.
