www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/06/19/school-children-identifying-as-animals-furries/
At a school near me (Rye) a child is identifying as a cat.
We have Dog here :-D
On a more serious note, I really don't care what people identify as. Genders may be flexible and infinitely variable but sex at birth is fixed - after all it's not a quantum particle. I don't give a fig about sexual orientation, it's the person that counts and I count amongst by best friends a gay lady and a gay man.
What I can't abide is the intolerance and vile behaviour to those that disagree (like JK Rowling who receives a lot of stick).
If someone wants to identify as a cat - who cares. If someone objects - that's their choice and one should be allowed to disagree.
It's becoming dogma and doctrine and you have to agree and accept all of these things and peoples' livelihoods and careers (including some good teachers) are being ruined by having different opinions or by making innocent mistakes.
I avoid using titles now on any correspondence through fear of cocking it up.
Live and let live - both sides of the argument.

I vote this to be reply of the day! :-D

I was watching a TV drama in the past few days where someone asked someone else on the phone where Jane was, and the callee said "She's here, right next to me". Jane (who didn't appear to be the type to have an issue with gender assignment, and gender fluidity wasn't any part of the plot of the programme) took offence at the use of the pronoun, saying it was very presumptuous etc etc. I*think* she was being was serious but even though it was only a drama, it made me think that it's yet another potential gotcha for the less woke of us.

Well clearly given his other post, Zippy has no intention of identifying as Thomas the Tank Engine.

>> Zippy has no intention of identifying as Thomas the Tank Engine.
I bet he/she/them/they are chuffed about that.

I don't know - there was a fair bit of huffing and puffing in my post! :-D

...I thought you were just letting off steam....

Personally I think he has gone off the rails. Gone a bit loco if you ask me.

I cannot read the Telegraph report as it's paywalled. I assume though this is the case currently going red hot on Mumsnet etc where pupils recorded a teacher who 'blew their top' over waht might have been bullying and was reported in the Wail over the weekend.
Is the issue really about a girl identifying as a cat or is there a wider/deeper issue touching on sex/gender?
|
>>I cannot read the Telegraph report as it's paywalled
I manage to read the Torygraph without giving the Barclay's a pfennig.
But if I told you how to do it, I'd have to neutralise you.

I see Lioyds banking are threatening to put the Telegraph into administration over unpaid loans of £65 million

Perhaps The Telegraph will accept that "offer"?
I cancelled my subscription a few months back - not for the first time - in the past their subscription department would have been on the phone trying to persuade me to come back. This time - not a peep.
I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if it folded.
|
I use this to bypass paywalls.
Would never use it to read a Torygraph article to be fair though

I don't read Mumsnet...
Yes, it's the story doing the rounds.
To me, it's not about gender identity - most people don't care how one identifies. I don't care either. I will respect peoples choices, but others should be allowed to have their limits respected as well.
What I cannot abide is the dogma / doctrine led nasty and spiteful persecution that people who have different views receive for having different views. Live and let live.
The child can identify as a cat if they want. The other child can call it a stupid choice if they want in their opinion. What they cannot do is make it personal or repeated - and what should never happen is the criminalisation of doing so.

I identify as a 39-year-old and have done for 15 years. You may refer to me as 'young man'.

I wouldn’t go so far as wanting to identify as anything other than perhaps a cynical old sociopath, but I’ve often thought it must be pretty cool being an eagle. No one is going to mess with you if you’re an eagle are they, and you get to live in some really scenic places. Guess I’d have to give up mountain biking though, it’d be hard doing that as an eagle.
;-)
|
With your balance? Eagle is a bad idea
|
Thought about that and it’s only really a case of choosing wide branches to land on.
|
....you're not bald-headed by any chance....?
|
No, anything but, however, grey is the new black you know…

Mind you dont scrape a wing feather on a branch as you circle in.

It’s ok, I’ll not be going anywhere near Herne Bay.
|
How the freak did you do that?
Flipping brilliant!

What, you mean he’s not actually “real”?
Fair enough makes sense now…
;-)
|
…on reflection though, he can’t be a “bot”, I mean, let’s face it, a self created being that can choose whatever it wants to be or add to itself, isn’t going to go for a beige Volvo is it?

Nooo, what I meant is, there is an AI site on the web, where you can say "make me a picture of a bald eagle with a broken wing, driving a beige volvo", and it will.

Does poetry too. - Try this :
In a realm where dreams take flight,
A tale unfolds of astonishing sight.
An eagle, majestic, bold and free,
Found itself bound to a destiny.
Through azure skies, it soared with grace,
Its feathers touched the sun's embrace.
But a yearning grew within its soul,
To explore the world beyond its role.
One fateful day, destiny intervened,
A Volvo appeared, polished and pristine.
Curiosity sparked within its gaze,
As the eagle embarked on unknown ways.
Its wings, now grounded, found solace inside,
A cockpit adorned with comfort and pride.
Nestled in leather, it felt a new thrill,
Ready to conquer every road and hill.
The engine roared, a harmonious hum,
As the eagle's journey had just begun.
The eagle steered with skill and delight,
A newfound freedom, day and night.
Through valleys vast and mountain peaks,
The eagle and Volvo, an alliance unique.
Bound by adventure, they traversed terrain,
Witnessing wonders, both sun and rain.
Together, they soared on asphalt wings,
Unfolding the beauty that life brings.
The eagle, once bound by its own wingspan,
Now embraced a world with a different plan.
Through bustling cities and winding lanes,
The eagle and Volvo etched vibrant stains.
They whispered tales in every passing breeze,
Creating memories that time couldn't seize.
For the eagle knew, as it drove the miles,
That freedom isn't bound by skies or styles.
In unity with the Volvo, a bond sincere,
They conquered the road, devoid of fear.
So, let this tale inspire your own quest,
To defy limitations and be your best.
For even an eagle, soaring on high,
Can find liberation when daring to try.
In the realm where dreams take flight,
An eagle and Volvo wove their story bright.
Together they roamed, both brave and whole,
A testament to the pursuit of the soul.

Talking of AI, SWMBO has just got us one of those robovacs. They, apparently, use AI.
From what I see, there's no danger of AI taking over the world for a while yet!

Who’s Al anyway? How does he know so much?

Saw an excellent Matt cartoon recently ..parents evening, pupil identified as a cat. Teachers response was hilarious. I’ll try to find it.

Was on my facebook feed earlier, something to do with poor grades as the school was overrun with mice.

There have been a couple - a lad who identified as a dog, and said he had eaten his own homework. And a pupil who identified as a cat, whom the teacher graded F as the school still had mice.
I don't mind what people identify as, so long as they don't object to people using the wrong pronoun from time to time.
But isn't the singular, neutral-gender, third person pronoun "it" not "they"? Can't be doing with singular they/them. But it will change, if it hasn't already.

Future historians will look back on this era as the time the population lost it's marbles.

...Future historians will look back on this era as the year of the cat...

Its actually the year of the Rabbit

...unless one identifies as Vietnamese....
|
I don’t mind a carrot, but a whole year of them?

Kids will exploit the debate over identity.
Wind up teacher good for a larf at their expense. The numbskulls in all this are the adults!

I'll identify as a Vogon.
Let me read you some poetry...................................................
