Gas oven not lighting - VxFan
Our Cannon Carrick gas cooker top oven refuses to stay lit. It's been troublesome for a while in that it can take ages to light, but I think that's due to a semi blocked jet. Now it will only stay alight if you hold the front panel knob in. As soon as you let go of the knob, the flame goes out.

Google suggests it's a failed thermocouple. Would you guys be in agreement that's what the problem is?

Failed thermocouple would be my call for sure.

check, yes chief culprit, and fairly easy to change.

I concur.

Hopefully. Very restricted access from the front. Might have to see if I can remove the back panel to get to it.

Can't find any How2's for my cooker, only ones for other cookers. Although it seems to be a very common fault for the Cannon Carrick model.

The model you have may be a rebadged jobbie from something almost the same.

My gas fire used to go through thermocouples every couple of years. Then I got an old style gas specialist and he showed me how to blast air across the pilot jet opening to remove the crud. I do this a couple of times a year and the thermocouple hasn’t needed replacing for five or more years. He said most changes are unnecessary. It’s not infallible but it’s worth a try.
I use an airbed pump with a fine nozzle and give it a good blast. Do not use a compressed air can as the propellant lingers and is an explosive risk.

>>compressed air can as the propellant lingers and is an explosive risk.

I've always assumed the compressed air was its own propellant. I should have read the label.

Yes I was surprised when I first found out too. I guess it’s been implicated in a few Darwin Awards.

Yes, I know from experience. The pungent smell got in the back of my throat and I had a coughing fit for half an hour. Same with iso prop alcohol too (probably same propellant). Yes, I tried that to see if I could wash any debris out of the burner jets. Didn't leave long enough to evaporate. It's the quickest the oven has ever lit though :)

I once had ants in the floor behind a gas back boiler, so I sprayed some ant killer around. I'm certain I'd turned off the gas, but obviously hadn't - subsequently realised there were two gas taps and there must have been some residual in the system.

Eyebrows grew back eventually.

Thermocouple ordered from Hotpoint. £25.25. Up to 7 day delivery.
Once I had the part No, I found I could have got the exact same part from www.ransomspares.co.uk for around same price, next day delivery. Hotpoint wanted another £9 for next day delivery.

When we had the Glow-worm boiler, I used to keep a couple in stock from the local plumbers merchants. I think they were 5 or 6 quid each !

Arrived via Evri (formerly Hermes) on Saturday morning, so I'm glad I didn't pay the extra £9 for next day delivery.

Took me nearly 4 hours to fit on Sunday afternoon. Granted some of that was spent hoovering out the cobwebs and having to remove 3 side panels to access one wire that went from the rear of the cooker all the way around the side, and then onto one of the front control knobs. In hindsight I should have just cut the wire and joined the new thermocouple to it.
Cleaned out the gas jet while I was at it, and put it all back together. No screws left over either, which is a surprise as I had to undo more than 20 of them to take it apart.

Result. Oven now lights up a lot quicker, and stays lit.

Thanks everyone who confirmed it was a faulty thermocouple.

Changed the grill element on my built in oven the other day. 6 minutes in total

Including testing

Interior light has blown in our Naff oven. It's behind a recessed screw-in cover that's stuck tight. There's no easy access to the lamp-holder from the rear without taking the whole thing apart.

It's staying blown.. It's not as if anything's gonna be reading in there.

..used a bit of that non-slip shelf/drawer lining to grip the recalcitrant cover on my oven light. Successful a couple of times.
Gas oven not lighting - Kevin
I've got some marine grip tape somewhere in the garage - I'll give that a try.
Gas oven not lighting - Kevin
Managed to get the glass cover off with grip tape and a bit of wiggling. Started to unscrew the lamp and the glass bulb, complete with wires, detached itself from the base. Oh dear, what a pity. Never mind.
Gas oven not lighting - Zero
Usually comes out with a spray of wd 40 and thin nose pliers gripping the screwed in base. Make sure the power is off before you start stuffing pliers, thin or otherwise, into the light bulb base.
Gas oven not lighting - Kevin
If I leave the power on will it make me wiggle a bit faster?
Gas oven not lighting - Zero
Aye, about 50 times a second

It might hertz you a bit though.

Had one of them in the old house, SWMBO wanted the 'slide & hide' door - cost a pretty penny. The first bulb lasted less than a year, the retailer offered to send an engineer to replace it at some ridiculous cost. The manufacturer was far more helpful, checking how old the thing was, supplied a removal tool (shaped piece of plastic) and two new bulbs, delivered for free. The tools are available on ebay for peanuts.

The next time the bulb blew, even the tool wouldn't remove the domed cover, so I removed the oven and worked on it upside down on a bench, finally doing it.

The damn thing blew again just before we sold the house, became an SEP (Somebody Else's Problem*)!

It's a 40W bulb IIRC, quite unusual for an oven.

You're obviously a better gynaecologist than I am.

No, just working in a bigger hole

Our boiler keeps tripping out. It's done it a few times recently, no idea why. It's easy enough to fix each time but why do designers stick a 'handle' on the reboot thingy that you can hardly grip with your fingers ?

Like the ceramic taps we had in the last bathroom....you couldn't grip them with soapy hands. Give me a Victorian type with a cross on top !

Probably the same reason as cooking instructions on packets are printed in 4 point.
Gas oven not lighting - Ted

Oh yes, I bought something recently which had the instructions printed in about 20 languages on the size of one piece of toilet paper

Had to scan and big it up about 500%.

Why can't they make Canderel sweeteners the correct size for the clicker thing. Either one gets jammed in the exit door or 6 come out all at once ! I had one jam this morning and in my rage I smacked the clicker on the worktop to free it and the top flew off. Best part of 300 tablets flew out. Fortunately only one made the floor, and the dog got it !

I swapped mine for lever arm years ago - arthritis!
