We stayed with some friends in France last week. I took my drone (249g) so I could do a 'droney' of their house for them.
Never looked into the laws until I got there. Turns out they do require registration and the passing of an online exam (in French I think). I immediately found a story about a British tourist who had been locked up overnight and had his drone confiscated. I'm registered in the UK but that doesn't count.
The house is in a very small commune and it seemed unlikely that there would be any problems, so I did a couple of fly-arounds and packed it up. The basic rules there are similar to UK - you can fly over people and buildings if you keep the drone in sight, but must not overfly "gatherings".
Only a few minutes later, a stout and serious-looking man wearing an Alpine hat appeared on the private track at the side of the house having a good nosey. By then we were sitting in the garden having a drink. I waved at him, he waved tentatively back then, self-consciously I thought, turned and retreated back up the track.
Shortly after, and this is a very quiet commune, there was a short burst of police siren nearby. I was convinced I was about to be run in. Whatever, I heard a car leaving a few minutes later. I honestly think this geezer had made a complaint. If the police are anything like ours they would probably have said "no sign of anything now, you'll have to see if it happens again".
The feeling of jeopardy hadn't quite left me when we were turned over by French security at the ferry port on the way home. 8 cars were pulled out of the queue and searched. What sort of profiling they are using I can't imagine, every car they searched seemed to contain pensioners. They kept asking about knives. Even picked up the drone bag and asked "Camera?" I said yes and they put it back. No mention of drones or the speed camera I had set off near Blois! Handbag/manbags searched and I was patted down when I set the scanner off.
A guilty conscience is a terrible thing!
