Queue a perfect way for someone wanting to cause trouble at minimal risk to themselves...

Just chuck it in with some clothes.... set the timer and leave.

I always warn the one smoker in our house not to leave plastic lighters on the dash in their car during summer, now we'll have to check for those disposable e-cigarettes that have batteries in before clothes go in the wash.

This to me suggests it was some kind of USB power bank that left in the pocket that was used to recharge an electronic cigarette, and it was the lithium battery that started the ball rolling.

Many commercial tumble dryers in launderettes are gas powered, btw.
