If so, how much do you spend and how often?

And what have your returns been like?

I allow myself a fiver a week, usually two lucky dips on Wednesday and three on Saturday.

Can't be bothered with the other games or scratchcards.

I've been playing exclusively online for a year or so - works well - and you get an email if you win, so no need to check the numbers.

Biggest win was about £125 a few weeks ago, other than that it's the occasional tenner.

Yes, a whole £1 per week. Same numbers of course 'cos I know the week I change will be the week they come up. returns, abysmal. the odd tenner. I use lottery.merseyworld.com/to check my numbers.

For a few years after my divorce, I used to play my ex-wife's numbers but 6 or 7 times for each draw so I could be sure that if she ever won, she'd never get more than a small slice of the jackpot.

Tend to do a couple of quid a week.

I would genuinely be just as happy with £250k (a decent 5+bonus week) as The Big One. No mortgage, no debt, a four figure hike in monthly disposable income, and a tidy little sum tucked away for the kids. It would be life changing.

I know the odds are astronomical, but someone has to win it.

We didn't tell you she changed them. ;>)
Do you play the National Lottery? - BiggerBadderDave
"We didn't tell you she changed them."

Then she wouldn't win it at all, and I'd get the lot...

We do the Wednesday and Saturday Lotto + the Euromillions, but only a couple of quid e/w

If I won some big wonga I'd like to fund some Palestinian kids through law school, in the West.

I dream of all the luxuries a lottery win would bring. Tax discs, a TV licence, being able to answer the door without turning the lights off and peering out the window first.

I've always had a yearning for the good life.

I misread that as 'peeing out the window first', like it was a family treat.

Must go to Specsavers.

There's nothing quite like the luxury of peeing on one's own lawn, and knowing that there is no-one within a mile or so to see one.

We do £3 or £4 a week depending on whether or not it's a rollover. So far we've won £600, plus three or four prizes in the £70 to £90 region, and quite a few tenners.

I feel lucky today.

I have set selection of numbers over five lines. Play these via monthly DD to Camelot for Wednesday and Saturday. Roughly 40-50 quid a month.
Since I started about 18 months ago, I've won about £170 in ten pound wins.

So say 750 quid spent, 170 quid won.

I have this great bridge for sale....

You have to speculate to accumulate. In it to win it and all that. I think I've had quite a lot of payouts compared to many who play lucky dip each week.
Do you play the National Lottery? - L'escargot
I have a couple of lucky dips on high days and holidays. I've won £10 twice.

Would be lottery winner – “Please God let me win the lottery. Business is really bad. I really need the money. Please God let me win.”
This goes on night after night for months.

Eventually God relents “Ok, ok, you can win, just lay off on the praying”.

Weeks go by, no win. Our would be winner starts praying again “Please God etc”

Eventually God replies “Ok, ok, I said you can win. But meet me half way. Buy a ticket”.

I used to play it every week when it first started. Don't usually bother now. Have a few goes on Euromillions when it is a good jackpot size. Don't win anything then don't bother for ages. The online method is best. Have used that for several years as it means you don't have to keep track of tickets. I don't bother with Lotto - jackpots are tiny. It's a once in a lifetime (or never) thing so I want a decent chunk!

I have done the ElGordo at Xmas a couple of times. Win bog all on that too!
Do you play the National Lottery? - Clk Sec
If it wasn't for the fact that we've been using the same set of numbers since the lottery started, I think we would just concentrate on the rollovers.

Where's NC when you want him?

When I used to work in Safeway I said that if I won the lottery I would still work the 4 week's notice.

I would park my red Ferrari outside the front door and on the hour and half hour I would put out a call over the Tannoy along the lines of

"this is a customer announcment, would the owner of the red Ferrari parked at the front door ...oh thats ME !! "

but other than the occasional tenners not much.

Girl in my work got 5 numbers this weekend, she has got £4k or so. Don't know if that would be good or not, knowing you were only one number away from the big one. What are your chances of then subsequently getting the big one with the same numbers another time??

(I know, same chance as any other numbers....)

I do it on=line as well. I think they take £8 every month by DD.
Won a few tenners and once had a £60 for 4 numbers.

Always get a little frisson of anticipation when an EMail arrives from NatLot saying they have some exciting news for you........never that exciting though.

I dream of getting about 7 million, setting the kids up with 2 mill each and keeping one for us !

So how many children does Ted have?

This should be in the maths problem thread.

When you win, your temporary postie will stick your 4 million cheque in the wrong letterbox.

Don't expect to see that one. If one of your neighbours suddenly moves, you know why.

The lottery is of course a con, designed to remove money from muppets on the chance - 1 in several million - of winning a lot of money...

It works.. The BIG winner is the Government...
Do you play the National Lottery? - Iffy
...The lottery is of course a con...

I believe the Lottery is run in a transparent manner.

Players know the odds, and it's easy enough to research the expenses and tax dividend if you want to.

From memory, the jackpot odds are something like one in 13m - ridiculously high.

But on t'other hand, someone wins (more or less) every week, and that someone could be you.

I've not thought of myself as a muppet before...

At home we've done the same 4 sets of numbers since week 1, now done on standing order. Never had a prize gerater than a tenner and those only come baout every two months.

Once in a syndicate of 13 at work many yeas ago we had 5 numbers up. Good paying week, something over £4k IIRC - got a bit over £300 each.

Gonzo this time.

By the way, who's Waldorf - or Gonzo for that matter?

Very diplomatic.

Looks like most of us are still here, so no one woke up to find a congratulatory Lotto email in their inbox.

I feel a bit sad that I am known for dreaming about mowers and not as a captain of industry any more.

This one without question :-)

Blimey H I only just stopped myself buying the exact same model last month on Ebay. It was near me, looked tidy and I fancied the mulching ability plus auto speed drive. I'm a bit mean on used mowers though so rarely pay more than £80 for any Ebay mower... think it made £110 so way over budget :-)

I'd rather talk to a man who dreams about mowers than talk to a captain of industry.

Captains of industry are right boars heads, in my opinion.

Toro, eh?

I see their products are cutting the grass at the Ryder Cup.

I have hesitated before contributing to this thread, because I guess I'm going to appear a spoil-sport, or something. But here goes...

I don't play the National Lottery - never have and never will. It disgusts me.

I remember going through the arguments for and against when John Major established it in 1994 and I came to the conclusion that it panders to the basest human instinct - greed - under the morally dubious justification that it finances "good causes". Leaving aside the way in which some of this tainted money has in practice been distributed, it struck me back then that if these causes are so worthy, why wasn't public money put into them?

I can think of only one good reason for playing the lottery: that it's fun to do, but, frankly, buying a ticket and watching an awful TV programme showing the draw does nothing for me.
Do you play the National Lottery? - Fenlander
An entirely reasonable view Chris. I do £2/wk on the wed/sat draws... same numbers every week. I don't watch the programme and often build up 3mths of tickets before I bother to go online to check the numbers. I'm content myself how things are but a big win could help the kids out in the future so for the cost of a pint I'll keep doing it.

Ive played three times in my life spending £2 a time. My winnings stand at £20. My wife works in gambling and she advised me to quit while Im ahead, so ive not played since although she does play Euro millions once a year on our wedding anniversary.

The other dead loss is Premium Bonds, where (ho,ho) you can't lose. Some years ago, SWMBO and I had the max permitted amount for a period of 2+ years. I kept a spreadsheet of winnings versus lost bank interest. Plenty of £50 "prizes" came our way and even one £1000 one. But, after a while even then the eventual rate of return was less then the Building Society. We cashed them in.

The percentage payout nowadays is far lower - so, don't bother with this one either.
