 Wood floor repair - sooty123
I've got some wood flooring that needs repairing, there seems to be alot of repair kits on the market.
Anyone used them and can recommend one?

Surface damage or board replacement? I'm a fan of youtube for stuff like this.

This is board replacement - tongue and groove oak as it happens but I reckon I could adpat it to my 'engineered'wood floor too.

It's just bits of surface damage, cracks etc.

I was thinking more like this. A paste/glue type of thing.

good lord no, right PITA preparing the damage area, getting the right colour match, sanding it down, sealing it. Then watching it pop out again when the temperature and humidity changes.

The damage looks like this type of thing.

Looks like real wood flooring? Right well all that varnish needs to come off, some of those marks are not deep enough to fill reliably.

The lot needs to be sanded and resealed. (with wax or a varnish )

Forgot to add, I know because I am planning that very same process

I've been using Danish oil on my engineered wood floors.

Easy to put on, soaks in, and hardens when it dries. I prefer it to polyurethane.

It is wood flooring yes, a tongue and groove type.

I think the worst is something like this, although not as long.

That looks like grooved that have been filled and has come out, water has entered and the varnish is lifting.

Seriously, get the whole floor sanded and sealed by a pro, and forget about it for the next 10 years

I would agree. Should last more like 20 to 30 years or more though. Our engineered wood floor is 25 years old and bar a few minor scratches is more or less as new. A decent engineered wood floor should take a couple of sanding downs at least. The enemies of wood floors are grit, high heels and dogs. Decent door mats protect us from the first, I don’t wear the second and I don’t have a dog.

Had a garden room built last year and elected to go for wood plank effect tiles as we had underfloor heating installed. Really pleased with them. Most people assume they are wood and very easy to look after and they won’t scratch or fade.

Yeah TBF our 1930s floorboards have lasted 20 years

I did think that as another part of the floor has had a repair.

I did think about getting someone in, however the worst is in a little walked on bit. I'm tempted to have a DIY go at it. Well before I go down the professional route anyway.

Well be careful, the worse you cock it up, the deeper the resolving sanding needs to be.

Worst case I'll move the settee.

Brilliant - now if only my SWMBO would let me get away with that kind of thinking...

Some people I know had some subsidence fixed which involved drilling a large number of holes through wooden floors.

Once the underpinning was completed the holes (approx 30mm across) were filled and then painted by a specialist to match the colour and grain.

This avoided the cost and disruption of lifting and replacing the complete floor + removing and re-fixing skirtings etc.

They are barely detectable even when you know where they are.
