If there are new postings or new responses to existing ones, a red "new" sign has hitherto been shown. This was useful and saved time searching. Why is it not still used - or this it a fault at my end?

Does the box in the top right of the screen show the user as Ambo or guest?
You don't actually need to be logged in but the notifications are driven by cookies. Is it possible you're rejecting them?
I do find that from time to time I click on a conversation with new messages but they're not actually showing when I select the conversation.

IIRC, you are a user of CCleaner,
If you've not set it up to remember certain website cookies, then whenever you use CC, it will remove them and also remove the new flags for this forum.
Go into the CC settings, and customise it to remember websites you trust.

Ambo shows. I use CC but it is customised. However, the "news" has now been renewed.
