Anyone buy one of these from Lidl today? An all in one with laser measuring as well as detecting stud, electricity and metal through walls?

Mine's measures fine, detects electricity sort of and won't find any of the studs in my walls of the new extension when I know they are there somewhere!

Anyone bought one and convinced it works well?

Bobby,

The lacklustre performance you describe is symptomatic of low power.

If the detector takes standard sized batteries, might be worth putting in some spankers-new Duracells.

I bought one some time ago and it seems useless for stud walls.
The pretty display points to the timber but it is not there.

I gently tap the wall with the knuckles of my forefinger and index finger. By ranging across the wall the different, i.e. more solid, sound of a stud position usually works for me. It can hurt after a while though.

Try using your head. You'll also hear the change in sound quicker...:-)

Nah! My head's hollow so it probably wouldn't work - too many confusing echoes.

Well just took it back and got money back without any hassle.

Checked Screwfix and one on their website gets awful reviews as well so will just leave for now me thinks!

I never find stud detectors very good so just use DE's method and a drill.

A drill also works on cables but don't forget your wellies. ;-)

A drill also works on pipes, so the wellies are doubly handy,

I thought I was using them wrong.
I've had the cheap version and an expensive B&D version. They've never pinpointed cables or pipework properly. Always read the instructions, but used to buzz miles from where I presumed a cable to run to a switch or socket. What do the professionals use to avoid mishaps? Trial and error I suppose. As has been said, thick rubber gloves and boots when drilling!!
