Anyone notice net issues this morning?

I can get Google, this site, a small washing machine spares supplier, Comet and random others.

But I cant get Wikki, Currys, EBay, PC World, Youtube, BBC.... Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage comes up.

I've only ever known it on or off not selected sites only.

...Anyone notice net issues this morning...

The wireless broadband at the caravan site in leafy North Yorkshire has been painfully slow at times this morning.

Odd. It must be our ISP (Freedom2Surf part of Tiscali) doing a bit of bandwidth management for some reason.... maintenance perhaps??

Damn annoying when the tumble dryer failed last night and urgent repair/replace research is needed.

Sounds like you're having DNS issues. You might want to try www.opendns.com :).

Should solve your problems and speed up website loading times by about a second in the process.

No issues here - the rural France half-megabyte broadband is as carp as ever.

Just managed to get onto my ISP's service status page. It shows a *core network outage* as a rolling incident.

Weird how this site is one of a very few that will load OK... if a little slowly.

What is the function of that DNS software Rattle?

On the tinternet, everything is addressed by numbers in the format

nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn

Mr Human cant relate to that, so they are given names.

BBC.COM.

Someone or something has to match (resolve) what you type in in letters, into the actual
address in numbers.

The domain name server does this for you. Your ISP automatically connects you to one, usually under their control. If it goes down, your PC cant find things.

You can direct your PC to look at other Domain Names Servers (DNS) if you so wish,

Google public domain dns to find out how its done, if you feel the need.

I've just diverted a customer's working tumble dryer from the tip to the local swimming pool ....

But you didn't want to know that, did you?

I am on Virgin Media - (was NTL).

It was rubbish 6 years ago. Now it's very good. Cannot remember the last major issue I had...because it was so long ago.

Works ok today.

Stop being a skinflint and get a better ISP..

All pretty well the same price though aren't they. This outage is very unusual... but when I have needed them they have a friendly UK helpline that tells you the answer correctly and in a minute or two. No leading you round the houses for 20mins on premium rates.

If you've a mobile with O2, they do (or did in July) a package that includes broadband and home phone (landline) for around £11 a month - I changed and halved what I was paying Virgin. Did the swop via Simplydigital - pretty smooth process.
