Looks like it's coming to an end on 22nd of this month.

They don't say what it's being replaced with.

As part of these changes, the myWaitrose newspaper offer will be ending on 22 February 2022. But we’re replacing it with something new – look out for updates in the coming weeks.
Thank you for your continued loyalty.

Loyal? I am not loyal. Well, not to Waitrose, anyway. Over priced. Over rated.

Loyalty has its price here. The Free Times might be it. I can see Sunday morning shopping changing. That and Waitrose supply chain issues, gaps in shelves are becoming more prevalent, more so than competitors.

"gaps in shelves are becoming more prevalent"
how 20th century :)
Waitrose weekly deliveries work a treat - very rarely have a shortage or substitution. The quality is
generally still better than T or S.
Trips out for (food) shopping) are now such a rarity, I cannot recall more than 1 since xmas.
The charge for delivery is more than offset by reduced mileage, clearing the ice off the screen and mixing with great unwashed.
|
Yes I've been having Tesco deliveries for some years now, usually once a week on Saturday afternoon. We occasionally run out of something but most "extras" can be bought on the rare occasions we drop by Lidl for stuff which you can only get there, or is better/much cheaper.
Tesco substitutions are often a bit poor as they put in a same product but maybe not (for instance) Tesco own brand, and adjust the cost to match, but the amount is often lower - so if you want 500g of something you might end up with only 280g - so we send then back more often than not.
They have been over-generous with some refunds - 1 broken egg will get you a refund for the whole box.
The single most annoying thing n this time of shortages is that you can only add stuff to your order which the supplying shop has in stock - and if it subsequently goes out of stock and drops off your list you get no warning.
The bonus of being on a delivery plan is being able to have deliveries anywhere - so before Christmas SWMBO and daughters went to a chalet on a site in Cornwall for five days and booked a delivery for soon after their arrival. We've done the same when at the Edinburgh festival. Especially handy for heavy deliveries (e.g. lots of booze!!).
|
I park in Tesco for the free chargers but often shop in Waitrose (one-man protest against trying to force Clubcards down my neck...).
Waitrose haven't had Grey Poupon wholegrain mustard in stock for weeks and have only just got back in the Mezzetta Jalapenos.
Maille mustard is distinctly sub-par, old chap.
|
Luckily Tesco don't protest about people using their chargers but not shopping with them!! :-)

When this Covid caper started various people signed us up for different supermarkets and put in what they thought would be a typical basket. Quite surprising what some people have in their baskets! Any road, we tried Ocado, Waitrose, Sainsburys and Tesco. Can't remember if we tried Marks - or was that Ocado? Not sure about Marks. We found that Tesco was best overall.
Lady Duncan now likes to have a Tesco delivery once a fortnight, in between times one of us goes out for bits. We try to avoid shopping together. We disapprove of couples who shop by committee!
1st Tesco
2nd Sainsbury

Must be a local thing, though I can only go on deliveries, as the only substitution I’ve had over the last few months has been mayonnaise, and that was because the size I wanted wasn’t available. I have a MyWaitrose card, but you can only get the free paper on a delivery from the afternoon onwards, which is poor admittedly, so I don’t bother. But I subscribe anyway so it’s no big loss.
I was speaking to my brother in Melbourne yesterday, who said the supermarket supply chain situation there is dire at the moment. Even basics are in short supply, and chicken almost impossible to get hold of. Driven, I think, by the number of people isolating and consequential reduced capacity in supply chains. Don’t think it’s ever got that bad here? Or at least, not in W Sussex. Maybe prioritising the grey/pink (dusty rose…?) pound ;)

As Z has said my local store is a large one and is suffering big time with empty freezers and crisp/cereal aisle plus the usual wine shortages... they had a big push over Christmas to stock up but now it's back to being poor.
Looks like Tesco are cutting their overnight stockers to save money and their 24hr petrol stations are going to be pay at pump only.
|
Among the basics of retail is that stock-outs are a kick in the P&L. Tesco aren't green enough not to realise that when customers come in to buy stuff they need to have the stock on the shelf both to get the money off them and more importantly to keep the customer.
They clearly have a supply problem.
|
W weekly delivery this morning - only 1 substitution, Rocket salad, substituted at no extra cost with 'premium' Duchy organic at no extra cost.
Not sure that would have happened with a LIDL delivery :)
|
>>
>> Not sure that would have happened with a LIDL delivery :)

...you'd have got Duchy of Saxe-Coburg...

I think the Waitrose free paper offer is being 'replaced' by in-store discounts for Waitrose card holders. In the same way that Tesco offer in-store discounts for Clubcard holders.
I say 'replaced' as I doubt they are withdrawing this offer for any reason other than to save money. First the free coffee goes, now the free paper. Austerity hits the upper middle class!
|
Ah well just have to put up with the 20 % staff discount my wife gets which was generously increased to 25% for December and January.
I like Waitrose
|
Perhaps fewer people are taking up their offer of a free newspaper so they are withdrawing it?
|
>> Perhaps fewer people are taking up their offer of a free newspaper so they are

Sometime last year the free paper was effectively removed anyway if you had a delivery before, I think 3pm. I assume that the 7 to 3 delivery slots are mostly picked the night before or early morning before they receive their papers!
|
>> Perhaps fewer people are taking up their offer of a >>free newspaper so they are withdrawing it?
I doubt that, as it's very popular in our local store.
If you pick up the Saturday Telegraph and the Times twice a week, that's a saving of over £7.
Or is it...
|
I rather think they will go down the “rewards” route as per John Lewis with free or discounted items based on individual customer spending. The JLP rewards scheme keeps me in free tea and cake in their cafe .
|
They are thinking about re-instating the free coffee.

They have already brought back the newspaper, only you need the vouchers on your app.
|
So I read somewhere anyway.
Free Coffee for MyWaitrose Members from 7th November with any purchase instore

Shame they cant fill the shelves with stock to purchase.

All supermarket still seem to have shortages and to have cut back on their ranges. Presumbably the problem is not so much with the supermarkets themselves as with the manufacturers and suppliers

I have three Waitrose within 4 miles. One is usually well stocked (tho with a much reduced range compared to 3 years ago), one is invariably very badly stocked, one is variable by day and time of day. All served by the same warehouse in Bracknell.
|
Staffing problems? i guess pretty low unemployment rates round your way.
|
>Staffing problems?
Probably shoplifters.
|
>> I have three Waitrose within 4 miles.
Me too but different sites to yours.
The closest is where my neighbour often shops for me - I get frequent feedback of items out of stock plus weeks of freezers dead.
I visited the next nearest one at 4pm on Friday. Many many shelves out of stock and some freezers dead. So few folks there I wondered if it was about to stop trading.
My favoured one of course had a dead freezer but reasonably stocked. Not many folks there.
|
>> the problem is not so much with the supermarkets themselves as with the manufacturers and suppliers
And lack of lorry drivers.
|
>> Shame they cant fill the shelves with stock to purchase.

They also need to keep their freezers working.
Several local stores have had extended periods of dead freezers
|
Have to say... that isn't my usual experience with Tesco!
|
Tis in Lanson, and the Em & Ess. Pud it down to the dearth of lorry drivers etc.
|
One of the benefits of Brexit .

I suspect the staff in my local Waitrose will be dreading the return of the free coffee… they are severely understaffed so the prospect of also looking after the customer coffee machine (which always broke down or overflowed) will not be welcome.
The carpark in my one is often rammed on a Saturday when I go to do my weekly but when I go inside it’s like a ghost town, the parking is abused and I suspect the coffee machine will be as well once people get wind of its return.
And while we are talking about Waitrose I do question many of their ‘green’ credentials…. maybe I’m odd but I do actually look to see where my food comes from so when I see that they are stocking onions all the way from Auz during the UK harvest time then I do wonder.
Plus don’t get me started on the latest con that they, and are others are now pushing on UK shoppers which is removing the best before dates on fruit & veg!! They spend millions on dumping food and that cost is now being moved to us the consumer…. no more yellow sticker cheap reductions, I overheard one manager telling her staff that they didn’t have the authority to discount the new style of packaging that had no date on even though the food was visibly ‘turning’ (broccoli).
|
Our branch is still doing reductions. This week Mrs A bought a French stick style sourdough loaf for 75p knocked down from over two quid. It’s not something we’d normally have bought at full price and it stayed fresh for two or three days.
Maybe bread is an exception to their new policy.
|
>> Maybe bread is an exception to their new policy.
I think the issue is with fresh fruit and veg which no longer has a 'best before' date and is not able to be sold at reduced cost on or shortly before that date.
|
My last Waitrose delivery had a bag of rocket salad that was short dated but included for free.
Their attitude seems to be if no suitable alternative just accept it as a gift. I think we were still eating a week later :)
Despite comments above we very rarely end up with 'missing' products.
|
My nearest Waitrose is 32 miles away in Otley.
Local COOP in Settle 3/4 mile
If you can afford to shop in Waitrose you can afford to pay for your own flipping coffee

no branch of Booths near you then?
|
Our nearest Waitrose is about 7 miles away in Altrincham. Been once, wasn't impressed. She wanted some poncy sauce for a recipe...No chance ! Got it at Lidl ! There's a Booths in Salford Quays but it seems to be there for the Media City lot. All booze and microwave meals. The one in Windermere is better.
Lidl is our choice...about 2 miles in Old Trafford but they have just bought a plot here 600 yds away. The are going to demolish the 60s office block and build new. Looking forward to it.
Plenty of others around. 3 Co-ops, 4 Aldis, 3 Tesco Express, Morrisons ( a dump ), Iceland, etc.
Never go hungry !

Indeed, as you know.
I try to avoid.....overpriced, understaffed, no self service check outs. Some of the staff operating the check outs are hopelessly slow, want to discuss the meaning of life and are oblivious to the queue of customers.
Settle has a great butcher, excellent fish monger on the Tuesday market and the ‘Olde Naked Man’ for decent bread. And a good newsagent whom I support.
Skipton is my preferred food shopping....A few pints, then Morrison’s and home on the (Free) bus, emptying the bladder before the journey ! Or Aldi if I’m passing in the car...no point driving there to save a few groats on your shopping.
Settle COOP is great....4 self service check outs, very friendly helpful staff, good range of products, and a decent loyalty scheme.

I'm not so sure it's the checkout staff who are wanting to discuss the meaning of life. In my experience it's the old customers who are looking for friendly helpful staff to unload onto. Or who didn't realise that at the end of their turn at the checkout they'd need to have some means of paying to hand.
|
>> realise that at the end of their turn at the checkout they'd need to have some means of paying to hand.
Surprised to see a young woman doing this the other day. Perhaps they train them young?
|
>>.... Or who didn't realise that at the end of their turn at the checkout they'd need to have some means of paying to hand.

They are not the only ones.
Young posers who used to have a massive shoulder bag with and equally large " Purse/CC holder" buried in the bottom of said bag. OOOH! look at all my CC/ Bank cards / membership cards!
Now just wait while I shuffle them and select the wrong one cos it then rejects.
Now replaced by a large smart fone that needs dozens of swipes ( look at all my cards etc) to find one that might work.
It is called progress.
|
Always use my phone for all card payments. Definitely does not require multiple swipes and it is indeed progress as you have a record of what you spent and where. No card limit either.

The Booths in Windermere, Ulverston, Milnthorpe all had self service checkouts. Its very Waitrose like, like being at home.
|

Having the date on fruit n veg was one of the key reasons I bought such items in Waitrose rather than other small supermarkets.
Twice when in a hurry I called in my nearest LIDL and grabbed some veg , one item was definitely carrots, on arrival home they went straight in the compost bin as they were so old lifeless.
never risked it again.
Planning for a ALDI replacing the site of my local Jaguar dealer site has been rejected.

Aldi fruit and veg is very hit and miss, Lidl is much better in that respect
The Jag dealer moved to a mega site in Sunbury, next door to Costco.

There are three local McDonalds near me but I always take the kids to the one furthest away because it's next door to Rolls Royce.
