It seems the thing to do around here is to cycle along whilst looking/texting on the phone.
Those who think they're uber-cool do it no-hands!

You don't need a cycle to look cool.
Just saunter along the pavement, phone in hand, earplugs in position, intently looking at the screen. The fast food shop needs an abrupt change of direction, watch your feet to avoid tripping as you negotiate the kerb.
Casually cross the main road with no change in pace, secure in the knowledge that traffic will give way.
An extended blast of the horn usually elicits a bored look of contempt, not gratitude for an injury avoided.

As Terry says it's just part of a modern trend.
Some folks on bikes take the same line as some car drivers; cyclists are wheeled pedestrians.

In Surbiton 9 pm last night saw one coming the other way , intently staring down on his phone , one handed , no lights at all and oblivious to the double decker bus sitting right behind him...absolutely an accident waiting to happen.
