I had that exact scenario not three hours ago, pupster refused to leave the training field, so I had to pick her up and put her in the car. She was filthy wet with mud so hence was I.

Having had 2 Retrievers I can relate to those behaviours :))

Both Spaniels are (or were) pretty good off and on lead for not doing this. The old Working Cocker latterly used to refuse to go for a walk in the dark, I suspect through eyesight or even brain problems. The Springer has not been off lead over the recent lockdown and is now better on the lead. Classic walk to the village shop earlier, tied him up to a railing whilst I bought 9 Birthday cards (what is it with March)...he's very nice with people..

You left your gundog tied to a railing? < SLAP > What is wrong with you man, has the spate of recent dog thefts passed you by?

Never had that problem with my dogs, it may have had something to do with feeding them after exercise. A colleague has to plod around three miles to for his walk, he takes it after feeding.
