Mould is forming at the foot of a double-glazed French window, spreading upwards and sideways. Pending a thorough investigation of the cause (ventilation or maybe a leak) can anyone recommend a suitable spray or fluid to kill it off please? It most be releasing spores into the room. The substance must be without risks to the carpet, the plastic frame and animals. Reply to this message | Report message

Will an ordinary household spray cleaner, Flash or similar (not a formula with a bleach), allow you to wipe it off? I'm not sure I'd worry too much about spores unless the mould is extensive. Reply to this message | Report message

Diluted Milton. about 10:1. I use it for the caravan drinking water system. Rinse off or wipe with clean water afterwards. Just try not to get it on the carpet as it will bleach, but it will kill mould and if it's safe on baby cups etc. I think it's probably OK for animals. I profess no expertise but that's what I'd do, just don't soak the carpet with it. Maybe cover with plastic. Edit, second thoughts - maybe clean with flash or whatever first then just wipe over with Milton to kill the mould? My wife swears by this stuff for cleaning mould from the d/g windows in the conservatory. www.homebase.co.uk/hg-mould-spray_p902134 It used to be a real problem during the winter when there was a great deal of condensation - until we bought a dehumidifier about 5 years ago from Screwfix; it cost ~£100. HG seem to get good reports for a few of their products. No doubt there are bad reports too though... Seen them in Robert Dyas amongst other places. Coincidentally SWMBO gave me a nearly new bottle of a Lidl/Aldi product called Powerfix Mould Remover to dispose of, as she considers it useless. I tend to follow such instructions but don't always believe her conclusion as I simply can't believe that a widely sold product can be that bad. Reply to this message | Report message

They were foul :(" TBH I dont see how anyone who buys the real Nescafe cappuccino sachets can be described as an arbiter of taste. +1 on the HG Mould Spray. Just about shifts all the black mould that forms around a washing machine door rubber if you are not thorough with the after wash drying routine. Cleaning tile grout and all that sort of thing. It has quite a pungent smell but can't vouch for its effect on something like carpet. Reply to this message | Report message

Nice one Vx. The boss has just said she uses vinegar which I had forgotten - we have a trigger spray containing 50/50 distilled clear vinegar and water, with a drop of washing up liquid in it, that gets used for general surface cleaning including mouldiness. The pong soon goes away. She must get through quite a bit, she's always putting a couple of 500ml bottles of vinegar on the shopping order. Reply to this message | Report message

I now keep a spray filled with white vinegar + a little washing up liquid in the shower and use it regularly on both the the glass and the ageing ( 8 year old) grout. Very effective and slowly winning the war on the light brown calcium? deposits in the inaccessible corners and on the shower valve and shower head. (We are in a hard water area). Taps, shower heads, plug holes saucepans etc. It will identify any poor chrome plating and expose the copper underneath. www.wilko.com/en-uk/wilko-original-citric-acid-250g/p/0332009 or in the local store I use high strength ( from the Chemist) Hydrogen Peroxide for removing fresh blood stains. Leaves no evidence :-) Milton ( mild bleech ) for removing tea stains from mugs. Good on Tupperware where a scourer is not the best tool. Three of my main weapons in my cleaning tasks. Used to keep Citric Acid for homebrewing, together with Sodium Met it liberated Sulphur Dioxide as a sterilising agent. I'm sure I read somewhere that it was no longer as easy to obtain due to concerns about its use for making homebrew explosive. WILCO and by local DIYshop stock it. Citric acid BP - food grade is available in small pots in my local chemist but I was always asked " What is it for?" I believe, as it is fine crystals, it is popular for cutting drugs.
