Interview with a mad mountaineer who had to amputate his own arm after getting trapped under a rock at the bottom of a canyon.

I noticed that there was another video there entitled 'Stuck between a rock and a hard place'. Black humour. I don't know if I could do what he did, but if you want to survive, and it's the only way to make it happen, well, maybe. Climbers are a psychologically tough breed, you need to be when making difficult moves thousands of feet high for sustained periods.

I remember being in Ullapool idly watching a crane trying to get something out of the harbour. Enquiries of other bystanders revealed it to be a fork lift.
The driver had gone over with it and had been trapped by his wedding ring.
He had to pull his finger off to escape drowning.

Apparently some people pull off bigger things than that!!

Nasty.
My late brother was a navy PO (electrical), he always said those who work with industrial equipment should never wear rings or other jewelry, he saw men who did sport rings have their fingers 'de-gloved', a sobering thought.

Happened to a friend of mine - caught in some metal racking as he jumped off it. Eventually lost the digit.

I know of a guy who was welded to a high current busbar by his metal watchstrap.

Was warned about this when I trained as a vehicle mechanic in the Army years ago; one of my colleagues did mange to burn himself quite badly by shorting a battery terminal with his wedding ring.
For that reason alone I've never worn any jewellery, except for a wristwatch when I'm going out.

I've heard a story (maybe apocryphal) of a BT worker losing a finger due to a wedding ring. 50V DC and 200A fuses can create a lot of heat.
Racks of equipment had solid metal bus bars carrying 50V DC. One was insulated. Open fuse holders had both sides uninsulated. I've seen fuses 'welded' in place by carelessness.
I had to do a live connection to a new row of equipment. Some joker 'dropped' a dustbin lid at a critical moment.

Bit different to an arm (n' a leg), I could pull a pinkie orf to save my life, but I wouldn't take an arm orf,
whatever the cost.
