The things i have to do for work... - Ian (Cape Town)
The newspaper where I work has a weekly motoring supplement.
The motoring chap is off on leave and has asked me to help out a bit.
So...
SEPT 28 - Hyundai Sonata launch (all day)
SEPT 30-OCT 1 - X5 launch. Fancourt Golf Estate.

Damn.

If it's that tough, Ian, you could always adopt the method preferred by local papers in the UK and simply rehash the manufacturer's press release.

The new Kia Ora is an exciting new lifestyle vehicle for the family that's going places. It successfully combines the performance of a sportscar, the versatility of an MPV, and the acoustics of an upturned tin bath.

That sort of thing. But somehow I think you'll cope.

Naah, the last Hyundai gig was a belter - fly to Jhb, luxury steamtrain to game park, huge dinner, lots of booze, bed, next day coupla hours of bundu bashing, helicopter flight round the park, and back home with a nice goodie bag... including a vuvuzela!

George Bishop? Nope... more Troy Queef!

Ok try an LJK style and do three volumes of drivel and then claim the Honda Prelude was the best car in creation, only bettered by a Bristol.

Bundu bashing??

Cripes, just as well I checked that before pressing Post. It had been auto-incorrected to 'Hindu bashing'.

>Bundu bashing??

South African colloquialism for offroad driving or driving in the bush.

Kevin...

It's a hard life Ian. You get an inkling of how tough it must be for Clarkson.

You'll survive and then you can get back to writing about... ??

I assume you will not arrive in your standard transport else your credibility might get dented :-)

And the problem with that is...?

The best launches, with nice locations, I attended were usually Honda and BMW. The worst ever - disco music and burgers - was Peugeot.

If you do you'll get there quicker in a Prelude...

Ahhhhhh LJKS - not drivel but certainly an acquired taste. I enjoyed him and Bishop, even though they were at opposite ends of the spectrum of writing styles.

However neither really talked about the car they were meant to be reviewing..........

I remember LJKS once writing in his column about how he lectured the design engineers at Rolls Royce tips about improving the driveability of the cars they were designing and how he was most afronted that they didn't implement any of his ideas. He once also wrote a review of the BMW 635CSi, massively criticising its handling and offering suggestions as to how BMW could improve it.

On top of that there was his Scirocco which he modified, reckoned it was the best handling car in the world, and then replaced with a Prelude. He liked Honda because they didn't build diesel engines.

Very inconsistent though. One month he'd be writing about how the Fiat Uno was revolutionary because of its high roof, the next he'd be moaning about how the development of taller cars was spoiling handling and therefore driving enjoyment. Actually a lot of the stuff was pompous and unreadable, but hey this was the 70s (and 80s).

I know I couldn't abide his column. There are those who adored his style I fully understand that but I found him pretty much unreadable.

Quick update.
Have the Sonata for a few weeks. Flappy paddles, 6 spd auto, 2.4 petrol engine, climate control, sunroof etc etc etc.
Pretty nice, I must say.
X5. Felt like Clarkson. POWEEEEEEEER!
Drove the top-range 4.0 turboed diesel, the 5.0 turboed petrol, and the ' lesser' stuff.

But too much. Far too much. Felt like a drug dealer driving them. and the power, especially over gravel roads, was frightening at times.

Is this the Hyundai?

carscoop.blogspot.com/2009/09/2011-hyundai-sonata-officially-revealed.html

I noticed they've nabbed Volvo's ventilation control design.

That's the one, corax.
Having good fun with it - tomorrow a planned 200km road trip out to a place called Riebeeck Kasteel.
