An interesting flight plan... - Arctophile
As noted on Pprune...

An interesting flight by an El Al Boeing 747.

El Al's last 747?

Is there some implication here that I don't understand?

Look carefully at the displayed track!

Have seen something similar before but I believe it was ....... NSFW.

Sorry, I'm clearly being dense.
An interesting flight plan... - tyrednemotional
...it's as plane as the nose on your face ;-)
An interesting flight plan... - No FM2R
Oh. is it as simple as it looks like the flight path/plan goes around another plane?

I was looking for something more significant.

Don't worry - you will get it in the end!

Plane speaking

Keep looking and you will be on the right track.

Didn't work for me on the phone. Some sort of chase plane taking photos?

Perhaps I can explain...

or even

So the image you see on www.flightradar24.com/data/flights/ly1747#22b566bf is simply the route of the plane on its journey from Rome to Tel Aviv, during which time it flew a pattern in the shape of a four engined jet. The lighter colour of the route shows it descended to 10,000ft to become more visibale and keep out of the way of usual air traffic over the eastern Med.

Ooohhhhhhhhhh.

Thank you, I really would not have got that in a million years.

Quite cool really, now I know.

BUt very easy with GPS and pre planned waypoints.

US Navy pilots were much more skilled doing it freehand, but a little abstract shall we say

I thought I'd let Mark do the being stupid bit as I didn't get it either, but now I do - it's not bad! :-)

Nice to have friends.

It's fairly common to draw such pictures in the sky, but sometimes they get a but risque....

The pity is that, other than on a radar trace, I don't suppose anyone actually saw the image.

I doubt that the aircraft would have left a vapour trail in the shape of a B747, especially as the shape was about 125 miles long.
An interesting flight plan... - Netsur
Yes - the trail would have dissipated long before the shape became obvious.

Also in the middle of the sea only a ship borne viewer would have see it; if at all.

Manoeuvring was around 10,000 feet so unlikely to trail anyway. FR24 records suggest LY1747 was a one off flight number. Aircraft positioned to Rome on 31/10 and returned yesterday.

Possibly empty or may have been a 'farewell' flight for the 747 fleet with enthusiasts and/or El Al staff aboard. .

That's up there with Olympic athletes "medalling", footballers "netting" and TV Chefs "plating".

It's appalling abuse of the English language.

Accepted by use/abuse. It's been plane spotter speak for 45+ years in my own knowledge.

Probably goes back to the war.

Very true. Presumably no chemtrails were deposited either....

South African Airways bought 747s before the end of apatheid for the same reason mentioned in that article. They were not allowed into other African country's airspace so on routes to and from Europe they would fly off the Atlantic coast and refuel in Las Palmas. I flew to Jo'burg on one of their first 747SPs in 1977. They were still using them until the early noughties or so when I was allowed to watch a landing from the cockpit jumpseat.
