Used to have Androids back about 5 or 6 years ago - Sony Xperias. Was anti apple and refused to get iphone but finally caved in when rest of family had them and was easier to have group imessaging.
Currently have an iphone7 and contract expires next month. Phone is absolutely fine.
My options are
1. go SIM only
2. get a new iphone
3. get an android
The beauty of getting a new iphone is that there is a seamless transition and through using itunes, everything on the new phone is exactly where it was on the old. Downside is, as a gadget freak, it doesn't give that "new toy" feeling.
Son has a Galaxy S9 and the screen and photos seem to much better than mine. Of course with whatsapp, group chats can be held on that between devices so making the imessage less important.
Whats folks thoughts? Anyone moved from apple to android? Any feedback?
When i previously had the Sony I got frustrated as there were regular android updates but they always seemed to take an age to come through on the Sony. Then some apps only worked on certain versions(they all had silly names like ice cream or suchlike). Whereas an ios update is an ios update! What are android updates and developments like now?

Android updates still have names as well as numbers. It's not uncommon or silly really. I've never been an Apple owner so can't compare but I like the flexibility I get with Android. But if updates frustrate you (...why??) then you may be better sticking with Apple.
Anyhow, if I had a perfectly decent phone which ran out of contract I'd go SIM only. That's what I do anyway - I buy reasonably cheap but fully functional Chinese phones (direct from China in one case, which admittedly hasn't been perfect) then get a cheap SIM. SWMBOs latest phone cost about £140 and does pretty much everything, rather well actually, except NFC. I certainly wouldn't shell out my own money for a premium phone any more as I don't believe they are that much better.
My current SIMS are £6 pm from Plusnet. 30 day contract, AYCE minutes and texts, and 3Gb data (no rollover of unused data but the whole plan can be used through the EU - at least for now!!). People scoff at Plusnet but they;ve been fine for me, better, in fact, than Virgin, who were pretty good. It's always worth checking the supplier coverage in your specific area though.

2 of my sons & I are on SIM only deals.
1 x son 100Gb +unlimited Voice/Text - £13 - EE it was a special offer a few months back - he buys his phone outright.
1 x son on 30Gb + unlimited Voice/Text £12 - Vodafone via his work but this is an old deal
I am on Sky unlimited Voice/Text + 3Gb for £6 - again an old deal - 90+% of my use is wifi.
The joy of £6 / mth against forking out £30-£40 per month for a new phone!
Try it - the latest model matters not a jot unless you "really really need one"
PS - I was forking out £95 for Sky TV +BB - they said my offer was coming to an end & were jacking it up to £116+ £5 on April 1st.............after 24 years having the full monty of programmes I cancelled - 10 days later they phoned me & after a bit of a discussion we settled on £67 (I cancelled movies as I watched only 1/2 per year) + £11 sim only for the 2 mobiles = £78 rather than £130+

I've been SIM only with 3. Recent trip to Vietnam was brilliant - "like home" package meant it cost me nothing over my monthly fee.
I fired up a three year old Android to take as I initially thought that taking my XS would be risky, it just got so frustrating waiting for multiple updates I just took the iPhone in the end and mixed and matched photos with a Lumix camera and the phone. The phone photos are absolutely top notch. I like Apple and make no excuses for that. We use Samsung Galaxy phones in work (for routing and logistic tracking) much less intuitive (IMHO) than an iPhone.

When I was looking at a new phone some months back, the Pocophone F1 was my Android of choice. tinyurl.com/y5hmtsdv It may be too large for some, but it has an exceptional spec for the price and would have been a good replacement for my ZTE Axon 7, had I been able to justify it!

It's a question of what you are used to. I had an iphone 2012-2016, didn't like the price of replacing it with one with enough memory, so went android with a Sony Z5. I quickly adapted and came to prefer it. Broke that, bought a Hauwei P9 which I still have and will keep while it works.
After 3 years of android, I now find Apple very annoying when I am asked to 'sort out' my wife's ipad or my friend's iphone.
Meanwhile, the Z5 was repaired and passed to my wife who broke it properly.
I have just bought her a Sony XA2 Ultra from giffgaff for £199 which is a bit of a bargain IMO. She loves it. Behind the flagships on speed benchmarks, fine in real life, 4GB ram, 32GB storage, expandable by up to 256GB. It's a big phone (her preference), has a headphone socket, fingerprint sensor, and great battery life. Single lens main camera but seems OK.
