Looks like some old satnavs may not work properly after 6th April 2019.
I hope critical systems are not going to be a problem.
I don't give much hope to Dad's Medion (Aldi). It is a cloned HP Windows CE palmtop with stylus with a GPS receiver dongle and he still uses it!
|
...applied a "critical update" designed to address this to the built-in unit in my Smart earlier today.
|
I hope adding the weight of those extra bits does not slow it down too much
|
...might slow it down a bit...
|
Time for a nibble or a byte then?

I emailed Garmin asking for reassurance that my old Nuvi 1490 wouldn't be affected.
Their reply;
"Hi
Thanks for your email.
Please see the article below
support.garmin.com/en-GB/?faq=zWQY6Z2kFiAuY9kDnDBgZ6&searchQuery=gps%20rollover
Your device is not expected to be effected by this bit obviously if it is then let us know.
Kind regards,
Nima
Garmin Europe"
Translated;
"Sorry, we've no idea what software any of our devices is running. We're checking some of them. You might be lucky but if you're not, please get back in touch.
BTW we think 'affected' and 'effected' are interchangeable."

No, translated it means "Hey, its 10 years old, if it works it works, if it dont, tough t****, buy a new one"

I agree.
My built in Sat Nav is a nearly 20 year old design and no maps newer than 2012.
I hardly venture out so i am not concerned.
There is however a DIY option to replace it with Android.
|
Have now completely gone over to using App connecting IPhone to car touch screen allowing use of Google maps / Waze / Apple Maps rather than built in GPS.
Never used a specialist GPS device in a car
|
The BMW inbuilt sat nav is brilliant, Google maps, is sometimes a tad better, because its traffic updating and rerouting is a little faster with its crowd sourced info.
Either way, with google maps, I cant see why anyone would purchase a stand alone device.
|
>>I cant see why anyone would purchase a stand alone device.
Bigger screen.
Built in to car, integrated to sound system so louder.
Always there, always charged.
No adds popping up.
Full map coverage (both google maps and the one on Microsoft left me stranded when there was no phone signal).
|
Sorry, none of these reasons are accurate or valid
|
To echo Z
uses same screen as a built in satnav
Integrates with car sound system no volume difference
Works with USB cable connected to car so charging not an issue
No ads
Never come across that except brief dead zones usually lasting less than 10 sec as you drive through. How long ago did it "leave you stranded" and where
Plus points for mobile app connected to car
Up to date maps
Far cheaper
Wider choice of interfaces etc
Easy selection of destination / waypoints
etc etc
If you have a suitable car and suitable phone it's virtually a no brainer
|
I guess phones are the way to go but they are not quite there yet!
Adds - google popped up with a questionnaire whilst doing 60 down the A1!
Lost signal around Grafham Water in Cambridgeshire whilst looking for a client.
Also when the network was down for a day - made travelling to and from a new client location difficult.
|
Not doubting you but I have never ever seen an advert when using navigation. Though if you were doing 60 down the A1, then I'm guessing at that moment you didn't need Sat Nav anyway.
I have my country maps downloaded. So if I do lose signal I only lose updated traffic. Ditto if the network is down for a day (though that has never happened to me).
|
From time to time I retry Waze, just to see if I like it now, though I never do.
I used it a couple of weeks ago. Stopped at lights, wasn't sure which way it would take me next, so glanced at the screen. It had a full screen advert, which only went when I started moving again.
I found that unhelpful for preparing my pull away.
I also echo loss of signal affecting traffic updates, given the signal round here is terrible. I'm never certain therefore the traffic is actually accurate, and the signal is going to return and tell me not to go down the slip road I've just pulled onto.
For that reason I use both TomTom on the phone, my preferred option, and the car inbuilt satnav as well, which at least gives me major traffic updates all the time (getting them via radio), though not minor roads.
|
I find that Waze gives me too much information.
Google maps seems to work for me, although i have never tried it on a long run. It does drain the battery, so I have to plug into a USB port.
|
Waze is just to gimmick laden, and the comic book look and feel make it like an arcade game.
Hate it, I load it up and try it from time to time to see if its improved, it never has
|
I'd like to like Google as a satnav, but to be honest I can't bear the voice. I know it has lots of lovely free features and so on, but it's just so awful to listen to.
At least on the TomTom I can have a gently soothing Australian lady, which pleases me no end.
And the one in the Ford itself is very polite. "Please prepare to turn right soon".
Google though is an odd robotic American female nastiness that barks at you. Unless it's changeable now? I've not used it for a year or two.
|
>>>> At least on the TomTom I can have a gently soothing Australian lady, which pleases me no end.
Does that mean she offers to assist you with your gearstick?

Do you not do that anyway in the car? I have always plugged my phone in to a usb slot for anything other than a quick drive to the shops, especially since the introduction of smart phones & colour screens and lower battery life. Even a bluetooth connection for an hour takes a chunk out of the battery life.
In the early 2000s I used to put my unsmart phone in the car kit cradle each day and never had to charge it anywhere else, luxury :-)
|
My Huawei is good for at least a couple of days without charging, so I rarely bother in the car.
I don't actually find Google Maps *that* hard on the battery. Waze, though, absolutely munches the battery. And as Crankase mentioned the adverts when stopped are very annoying.
|
The Moto G5 will do a days Google Maps drive on a full charge.
|
Sniff. That would mean me moving down market from my iPhone 6S.
|
>> Sniff. That would mean me moving down market from my iPhone 6S.
Such an upmarket crap battery
|
>> Even a bluetooth connection for an hour takes a chunk out of the battery life.
There must be something wrong with your phone battery. After a 2 hour drive my iPhone SE still indicates it has 97% battery life remaining.
|
Agreed.
My phone "bluetooths" to the car, no noticeable battery impact.
Is there some non-stop synch going on?
|
quite possible as it is a company iPhone SE with who knows what additional junk going on allowing seamless connection to various internal stuff
|
I use MAPS.ME, allows you to download maps for all over the world (or just parts of the UK) and uses true phone GPS, ad free and quite detailed.

Ok, in the spirit of giving new stuff a chance, I loaded it up last night, for a planned outing today. Loaded the maps for the route. The maps look really very detailed, seems to be based on the open source maps, but can zoom down to remarkable levels including buildings.
1/ Put in the destination, ( a pub in deepest hampshire ) took 30 seconds of twirling thingy to find me a bus stop in Huntingdon. Tried again, this time the one I wanted was third in a list, along with an advert at the bottom of the page for some unrelated rubbish
2/ It then insisted on a starting point, despite the fact the thing knew where i was. Tried to enter it, but it cant find my post code.
Not impressed, its been deleted.
Oh and google maps, now includes speed cameras.

You bounder. It was probably your iPhone bill that knocked Ginni's package down to $16.4M this year.

She managed to spend over $1m on travel tho.

Not that much in the scheme of things, really. I seem to recall that LAX/LHR was around $20k round trip and I bet it's gone up by now. So even one of those a week is a million bucks a year, never mind hotels, taxis etc. etc.

Company jet or not, $1m in travel expenses for a year is simply not that much in context.

It is when travel for the frontline troops to customers (you know them what pays the bills) has been severely curtailed. It is when its a 20% increase over last year. It is when it includes freebies for your family. It is when she barely travels outside the US.
|
Z, don't know who you have been getting your info from. From the inside, travel & expense for most regular, non international, travellers, is not restricted in my experience. I currently cost them about 400-500 pounds a week for travel & hotels and on this client I am one of the cheap ones.
|
Well the old Garmin navigated us to Darlington, Croft and home without an issue yesterday so I guess I can keep it until its 'lifetime' update naffs out.
That's good to know; I'd hate to change any tech when it's less than half-way through its life.
:)
