According to Google NGram, in British English the spelling "grandad" is more popular than "granddad", however American English, the spelling "granddad" is more popular than "grandad". granddad. ?gran?dad. (also grandad) noun informal - one's grandfather.4 May 2011

American or ignorance? I think its likely to the latter. I see poor spelling regularly in newspapers and the BBC website. I even saw one in a headline this week in either The Times or The Telegraph. I can't remember which.

On second thoughts DE you may be right, BBC website is also running an item on "lampposts" which is US spelling.
