Hi Zero,
As our resident font of knowledge for all things "rail", do you know why the rear coaches of the train have to be vacated as the whole train goes through the Shakespeare Tunnel at Folkestone?
Thanks,
Z

I would postulate that due to the narrowness of the tunnel if the train had to be brought to a halt it would stopped near an evacuation point where the tunnel is wider. It would not be possible to open the doors on the rear of the train.
As you sat Zero will know for sure.

Exactly right, its due to lack of clearance and evacuation. Access points were excavated, and the track is marked so the driver knows where to stop to allow evacuation.
Prior to Javelins, compartment coaches were banned, only corridor coaches allowed.

Cheers.
Nice service on HS1, I wish all lines were like that.
The GPS on my phone clocked us at 135MPH.

Its only 11mph faster than Mallard

Could the Mallard pull as many coaches?
Do you know anything about the proposed use of Javelins on the Eastbourne to Ashford service? The current service currently stops at Ashford on platform 1 but there is talk to link the line up to HS1 so trains can run through.
Rye is already seeing house price increases because the journey is now just over an hour. I guess a link would cut the journey time to under an hour and make it very commutable.

At 126mph going down the slight gradient for the speed record - I doubt it. But as a general A4 class train I'd expect it to pull as many if not more coaches than the Class 395 Javelin (6 isn't it for Javelin?).

A4's (the mallard class) pulled 11 to 15 - about 350 tonnes at 100 MPH in service. Even today its sister Union of South Africa has a load of about 11, and cruises at 70

NO idea about future plans. I like Rye, that would be a nice place to live.

Yes, its a lovely small town. Its got better recently with more restaurants and boutique shops and even a small independent cinema and an independent proper supermarket.
Unfortunately, because of the better links to London, locals are being priced out of the market by commuters but they have brought the prosperity to fund the aforementioned facilities.
